The biggest clubs in England now and 10 years ago

Surely cash is king nowadays. Clubs who generate the most money are seen as big clubs. Until we get a new stadium, we are always going to be paupers at the top table. Add in the fact you've got elstrone and our 'commercial team' negotiating the kit bag and sportpesa deals, we will never join the elite.

Football has changed, we can all agree on that. It took me a school trip aged 11 and in last year of primary school before I spoke to a lad in similar who didn't support Everton or Liverpool. Point is, football was about going the game, other than the FA Cup Final and England it wasn't even on the telly other than highlights for MOTD.

Football now is a global game; lads of ten & eleven can name Baca, Real, Bayern & PSGs first team. They have second teams and for lids around the world the EPL represents the most exciting brand, so they'll say they support one of the leading sides who appear regularly. Majority of supporters who follow a team don't ever go the game, will never go the game or if they do they'll be so excited they pay a fortune, have a selfie stick, wear a half & half scarve and speak with a foreign accent. The clubs love it; take their money in the club shop & boast about their Twitter/World Club subscribers.

Too right football has changed. It's up to Everton to either embrace it or rely on lads like me to pass on to future generations why we are still boss. I know which is the better option.

Indeed.

The whole RS legend is based around a glittering era of dominance between 1976 and 1984 when they swept all before them.

Their biggest rivals in that period were Ipswich Town and Forest :(

The traditional powerhouses of Everton, Arsenal and United were all in the doldrums for most of that time.

By 1985 they had all started getting competitive again and one by one Everton, Arsenal and then United started winning the title again and the RS stranglehold was broken.

But they live in a time warp, unable to accept that 1990 was a last hurrah at the summit ;)
Sorry mate, but that is not true! liverpool were big in the 60's and had a great, great side. To say they were nothing until the mid 70's simply isnt accurate.

Ten years is nothing though. Since the media took an interest in forming their darlings, so they can focus and simplify their advertising, football has utterly stagnated since division 1 was rebranded by the media.

With the exception of Leeds who tried to expand too quickly, and dived; and Man C and Chelsea who were gifted a big wedge of cash just before the authorities decided they didn't le that kind of instability in their marketing strategy, the top clubs perception has been maintained the same for around 20 years, not 10.

I remember man u, spurs, chelsea, man c all being division 2 clubs in the late 70s, and being viewed as smaller clubs than Wolves and Everton. Of these, spurs were the first media darlings as soon as they got back, doing no wrong while chelsea were just viewed as mud cloggers. Man u were always given leeway and shown fondness beyond their capabilities, by the media, after their Munich tragedy.

As has been said, the rs started being noticed in the 60s. Before that though, they were nowt, really. No real history, and never any class.

Did I say they were "nothing"?

No, I did not.

I was pointing out that they were no more successful than anyone else until their phenomenal run of success for just over a decade starting around 1973 which saw them lift the title about eight times whilst the three teams level with them on most successes went into a fallow period.

@Jamo Martinez posted the stats for most league title wins as the 1970s started and Everton, Liverpool, United and Arsenal were all level on seven.

That is why I say the Kopite view of RS exceptionalism is based on a decade long period of dominance in which they were unchallenged by their main rivals

Since Everton woke up in 1985 and up to the present day, they have only added a further three titles to their haul, the last of these in 1990.

Which I think serves to illustrate my point.
