The Beatles vs Monty Python. Greater act?

I'm watching Holy Grail now and it still proper cracks me up. The black night scene is genius but the witch scene proper gets me.

"...and she turned me into a newt!!"

"A newt?"

"....... I got better".

I also cant stand the Beatles.

This is world class missing of the point
I’m not missing the point at all really. Many people will hold them on this pedestal regardless of what they think about the quality of their work. It’s stylish to parade their name.

I do however understand why the older generation appreciate them. They were trailblazers. They grew up with the Beatles and Python. The younger generation are just weird about it.

The trailblazers bit is the point though. The original post wasn't saying they are the funniest ever or best musicians ever, just that they changed things in a way that everyone after them owes to in some way.

It's like the Hungary team of the 50s. No one would say they are the best team ever but the concepts they introduced are traceable to the great teams of today.

I propose a new thread Rameses II vs. Pablo Picasso. Who was better?

Unless you're comparing the Beatles cross over into comedy on Help! to the Python movies or The Lumberjack Song to Tomorrow Never Knows there isn't really a point of comparison.

I’m lucky enough to work for one of these products - I can confirm the Beatles are one of the biggest brands in the world 50 years later.

Beatles, overrated.

A brave call mate.

Not that brave, it’s a pretty common opinion tbh, makes perfect sense that arguably the most popular band of all time would also be considered one of the most over rated.

One of life’s great joys is watching a boomers face drop when you tell them the Beatles were gash, it’s like someone’s just shat on everything they’ve ever believed in.

My brother reckons the Beatles are rubbish but he has this weird thing for obscure bands and unless he personally discovered them he won’t even give them a listen.

Inverse snobbery

The Beatles, especially 65-68, were groundbreaking and brilliant.

Not a believer in “the 1st is the best” philosophy. Monty Python had some funny skits and The Beatles were a big influence on the music industry, but neither are worthy of the pedestals they are put on. Release all of their material today and we’d be talking about how mediocre they both are.
Oasis released most of their stuff in the 90s and are one of the biggest bands in the world, so...

I think that's part of the point. They changed the game. Richard Fosbury revolutionised his branch of athletics, but there are about a million who came after him, did it better thanks to him, and will never be remembered. He probably wouldn't even qualify these days. Would Dixie Dean get 60 goals in today's game? Does a 'no' mean his statue should come down?

This is a really stupid conversation. Python are obviously bigger, there were 6 of them, not 4. Pete Best was never a Beatle, and even if you throw in George Martin then you've got to include Carol Cleveland and maybe even Neil Innes.
