The Beatles Album Discussion Thread: #12 - Abbey Road.

Here Comes the Sun King is an unheralded gem. That said, it's hard to see beyond You Never Give Me Your Money / Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight. Despite Lennon's two or three sterling contributions (She's So Heavy, Come Together) and Harrison's timeless Here Comes the Sun (I was never that keen on Something) it was Paul's album really, wasn't it? He was never this good again. The Beatles were no more.

The bit in Carry That Weight where the original motif from You Never Give Me Your Money is played on horns is my favourite Beatles moment, pretty much.

Phwoar!

The Greatest Albums of all time.

1. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds.
2. Prince - Sign O' The Times.
3. The Beatles - Abbey Road.

Pretty much sums up my opinion of it.

DISCUSS!

1 and 2 , fine , but Id take Revolver prob' in truth .

I know at least one guy who dislikes Abbey Road because he sees it as heralding that polished - clever but rather soul-less - AOR sound of the seventies. Bit harsh, methinks, although Something does sound like a blueprint for Kansas, Journey and Toto's careers.

Abbey Road is my favourite Beatles album - It contains my favourite Beatles track 'Here Comes the Sun' - and its hard to believe its a - 'Lets do one last album', as it contains so many uplifting and cheerful tracks. Especially when you compare it to their penultitmate 'Let it be' - which although still like has a much more negative vibe to it.

It really is a quite spectacular achievement when you consider the circumstances it was made in. Starr and Harrison had already "left" the band once - Lennon, too, I think. There was huge disagreement over Alan Klein, Apple had quickly turned into a fiasco, Yoko loomed over the band like a voodoo doll and John, when he wasn't hating Paul, was on the scag. It was over.

And then they did Abbey Road.
