5,000 Club: The 10 Highest Scoring Teams in the History of English Football's Top Flight

17 AUG 2016

Chelsea became the latest club to score a 5,000th top flight league goal on Monday night, joining a select group of teams to have reached that huge milestone at English football's highest level.

The Blues are 10th on the all-time list, but who else features ahead of them in the top 10?

There may be one or two surprises...

*figures accurate as of 17th August 2016

10. Chelsea - 5,001 goals

Eden Hazard scored Chelsea's 5,000th top flight goal as the Blues opened their account for the new 2016/17 Premier League season this week. Diego Costa scored the 5,001st later in the same game to claim three points for new manager Antonio Conte.

Did You Know: Chelsea scored 98 league goals in the 1960/61 campaign - a club record until 2009/10 - and still only finished 12th in the final league table that season.

9. Sunderland - 5,115 goals
57b440bd3aaca4bd73000001.jpg

Sunderland were a real powerhouse of early English league football, finishing as champions on three occasions in the first seven years that top flight league competition took place, also delivering further titles in 1901/02, 1912/13 and 1935/36.

Did You Know: Despite being considered a 'yo-yo' team in more recent years, the Black Cats were top flight mainstays for nearly 70 years from their initial entry to the Football League in 1890 until their first relegation in 1958.

8. Newcastle United - 5,117 goals

Newcastle, like Sunderland, were early heavyweights of English football, winning three titles in five seasons between 1904 and 1909. The Magpies have retained a reputation for entertaining football with plenty of goals ever since.

Did You Know: Newcastle's record goalscorer for a single season (all competitions) is not Alan Shearer or Jackie Milburn. The top mark of 39 was set by Hughie Gallacher in 1926/27 and was later equalled by George Robledo in 1951/52.

7. Tottenham Hotspur - 5,133 goals
57b4406f4e77ee4a80000001.jpg

Tottenham have only missed out on one top flight season since 1950 and scored goals for fun throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Spurs were later a founding member of the Premier League in 1992 and their 5,133 goals is evidence of their general consistency.

Did You Know: Third place Spurs' Premier League return of 69 goals in 2015/16 was the club's best for 30 years, but the 74 goals scored by Mark Falco and co. in 1985/86 was only good enough for a 10th place finish.

6. Manchester City - 5,413 goals

Despite now being known for their owner's great wealth, after spending a lot of time out of the top flight in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Manchester City have largely been a regular part of England's elite division throughout their history, with close to 5,500 goals scored.

Did You Know: City are one of only three clubs to have scored 100 or more league goals in a single season in the post-1992 Premier League era. Seven different players contributed at least five goals during that campaign.

5. Manchester United - 6,328 goals

Perhaps surprisingly low down the overall goal standings with 6,328, Manchester United's success was largely limited prior to the second World War. The Old Trafford club were crowned champions for 1907/08 and 1910/11, but actually spent almost as much time in the second tier as they did in the top flight before 1939.

Did You Know: United scored 393 top flight league goals in just four seasons between 1956 and 1960, a fact made even more incredible given that eight players were tragically killed in the 1958 Munich air disaster in the middle of that run.

4. Arsenal - 6,644 goals

Arsenal have had countless legendary goalscorers down the years, from Jimmy Brian, Jack Lambert, Cliff Bastin and Ted Drake in the 1920s and 1930s, to Malcolm McDonald in the 1970s, and Ian Wright and Thierry Henry more recently, all contributing to the 6,644 tally.

Did You Know: Since moving from south to north London in 1913 and dropping 'Woolwich' from their name, Arsenal can boast that they have never been relegated, with 97 years of unbroken top flight football for the Gunners.

3. Aston Villa - 6,608 goals
57b4434e77c9e08dd9000007.jpg

Although now relegated to the Championship after one of the worst seasons in their long history, Aston Villa remain a traditional giant of English football and only two other clubs have scored more than their 6,608 top flight goals.

Did You Know: Villa's measly league goal tally of 27 from 2014/16 was 101 fewer than the club's single season record of 128 set in the 1930/31 campaign - Tom 'Pongo' Waring scored 50 of those goals on his own.

2. Liverpool - 6,621 goals
57b442db4e77eed7e9000003.jpg

Liverpool's dominance at various points in English football history has seen them plunder over 6,600 top flight goals since first joining the Football League in the late 19th century. The Reds have won league titles in seven different decades, but not since 1990.

Did You Know: The only time Liverpool have ever scored 100 or more goals in a single top flight league season was in 2013/14 when Luis Suarez almost drove the Reds to the title.

1. Everton - 6,868 goals
57b442a91e07a56d5a000006.jpg

Longevity has put Everton top of the list with 6,868 goals at the highest level of English football. Inaugural members of the Football League, the Toffees have incredibly only missed a total of four top flight seasons since 1888.

Did You Know: Everton scored only 45 goals to finish fourth in the Premier League and qualify for the Champions League in 2004/05, the same number as the season before when the Toffees finished 17th and only narrowly avoided relegation.

for a club who have spent so long in the top flight compared to others.

We aren't that far ahead on that. In fact give it 5 years and the longest serving club by a margin won't even be top of that either

For that to be true Liverpool will have to score on average 49 goals per season more than us, in the league for the next 5 years.

I'm not so sure why you were so quick to put a negative slant on a fantastic stat.
