Stepped into the National role after the disastrous Taylor reign, led the team and the country through the greatest summer for 30 years but couldn’t be persuaded to stay on for the France 98 campaign which was a shame as we’d have had a better shot with El Tel than Hoddle and his psychobabble

He had no choice but to stand down after Euro 96. The decision was made for him and Hoddle was announced. Shocking decision.

I remember hating him for a while.

Even though I was mid-teens Mexico 86 was the first WC I watched properly all the way through, mainly because of the Everton contingent.

Lineker was in the studio for the final as was Venebles who was leering at him like a dirty old man, hanging on his every word. The host presenter didn't help but asking several times about maybe playing for Barcelona one day.

Anyway, a great manager.
