Player Valuation: Free Transfer
I am a blue and have been watchin the mighty blues since we beat watford at wembely in 1984(the first footy game i ever saw) and i love my team no matter what..i have seen some class players such as sharp, lineker, ratcliffe, southall, steven and my hero andy gray and so on and also some [Poor language removed] such as holmes, barrett, phelan, spencer and tony thomas but i still support the team whoever plays, however i seen tony cottee and duncan ferguson and it pisses me off how cottee never gets recognition for what he done with us,just like i am a kevin campbell fan but duncan(as good as he was when he could be arsed)seems to get more recognition than these two who done more than the big man during their time at the blues..i have read sites that critcise cottee for not taking the pen v wimbledon and fair comment but no one mentions that duncan let bakayoko take one v sunderland in the league cup v sunderland in 98-99 instead of stepping up himself...like joe royle said,he was a legend before he became a player for us...i love the big man but think he could have achieved a lot more whilst with us...FTRS...NSNO

If Cottee had taken the penalty that day the club may well have been relegated, he had missed a few the past year before that, 2-0 down, biggest match in years, who's got the nerve to do it, I would be crapping kittens if it were on my shoulders, Stuart kept his head in front of no supporters actually, just a crane and some workmen.

the rest is history.

Cottee was a bit selfish at times, and some players, Sharp for one, did not get on that well, he arrived with 3 goals on his debut after his £2 million arrival in 1988, but never turned out to be the prolific scorer we had hoped for, still was a danger to defences at the time, and could of lost some weight towards the end.

I've spoken of Ferguson before here, no need for a duplication, I still maintain he does not deserve legendary status or a place in the hall of Goodison greats.

I've always maintained that, in general, The fans who regard Ferguson as a legend, are those who are too young to remember an all conquering Everton team. Point of fact, They started supporting the blues in their darkest period in the last half century.
It's easy to understand coz, to use a Joni Mitchell lyric, he was a bright star in a dark age. He did give us something to feel proud about in the direst of times. For that, I consider him a hero rather than a legend. but it's all relative isn't it.

Welcome to the OP. (y)

I agree that Cottee has been too easily airbrushed from our history and demoted behind the likes of Duncan (who I liked, but that was all about attitude rather than ability...not that he was [Poor language removed], like). Cottee's goals per game average for EFC stands comparison with almost any other player. It's said he scored them in inconsequential games rather than like Sharp in cruicial games. But a goal is a goal. If we'd won a trophy in his time here he'd have been a legend.

I just think his face didn't fit: he was - and remains - a Hammer, and when he was here he locked himself away in his hideout in Formby and became a little Tory troll...not the most sociable things to be and do on Merseyside!

Very true, altough he did well for us you knew he was always a Hammer. He scored a lot of goals but he also missed a lot of chances - i know he got himself into those posisitions - but it was still always a frustration. He was like Andy Cole he would get 4-6 chances score 1 then miss 5.

Although he will always have a soft spot for the 91 4-4 cup derby draw and the replay.

i always thought wayne clarke had a decent record for us

wiki said:
Clarke's five goals in ten games, notably the winning goal away at Arsenal not long after he joined,[12] in the remainder of the 1986–87 season was enough to earn him a championship medal.[9] The following year he scored the only goal in the Merseyside derby not only to beat arch-rivals Liverpool, but also to prevent them setting a new record of 30 games unbeaten from the start of a season.[13] At the end of the 1988–89 season, during which he helped his club to reach the FA Cup final but did not play in it, Everton brought in Mike Newell from Leicester City in part exchange for Clarke and £500,000.

5 in 10 to claim the league

ended that teams unbeaten run, i can hear the "you can shove your feckin record up your arsh" ringing in my ears, the day that john barnes had cut his hair with a breadknife before the game:lol: oh the joy that day.
he came off the bench a lot so his record is probably better than the 1 in 3 that the stats produce.

cottee came for the wedge, dunc came because he fell in love, don't know about legend status for either though.

The thing about the attitude to Cottee is that it's all mixed up with the timng of our downfall as one of the elite clubs. Players around him like Beagrie, Johnston, McCall etc etc simply weren't quality. Beardsley stood out from the dross. Cottee and the rest of them are synonymous with our fall from grace, just as *coughs* certain events are. Sharp took the chance in his book to rubbish Cottee knowing full well that by doing so he was playing to the gallery of Evertonian prejudices about the letdown teams of the late 80's/early 90's. Fact is he (Cottee) was a cracking finisher and Sharp doesn't like contenders to his throne...he couldn't stick DF for the same reason. Insecurity on his part obviously, because his place amongst the legends is assured.

True to an extent part of it to was he came to a club that had been challengeing titles and all of a sudden werent despite wonga being spent, he had the unenviable task of trying to replace Linekar and much of the dissapointment at the time was that evben though he could score he wasnt as successfull as Linekar - in many ways he had a better pedgriee coming to us that Linekar had.

Also he was judged on the fact that he was a Harvey signing rather then a Kendall one. I wonder had Howard signed him would our view on him be different.

Like many others I have never regard Dunc as an all time great or legend if you will that said he showed far more committment to our cause than either Cottee or for that matter Lineker. Cottee has shown his love of the blues when working as a pundit for Sky, mention the Hammers and he is star struck, mention us and it is like 'oh yes I used to work there'

Who would I rather have in my side, I would have liked to have seen both Dunc and Cottee play together, Cottee's goal return would have been higher and Duncs contribution would have become more noticeable

It's all about timing. (y)

TC is the whipping boy of a generation of blues brought up on silverware. Not a great, but certainly not worthy of the constant undermining of his efforts for the club. *Cough* Graeme *splutter* Sharp *cough*.
