Just had my first surfing lesson today, managed to stay on my feet for well over a second. Rest of the time was spent falling off and getting hit on the head by my surfboard. 10 year old son was a star and managed to stand and catch a few waves all the way to shore. Anyone else tried surfing?

Used to back in the day.

Grew up on the Central Coast and boogie boarded before picking up an ace board.

Haven't shredded for donkeys, i just was pretty rubbish at it tbf.

I haven't for a while (used to go most weekends) because the nearest spot around here is Abersoch which is a 4 hour round trip. Been on a few surf holidays around France though.

Definitely tough to start with, but once you get the knack to ducking under oncoming waves it's an absolute joy.

Flashbacks of getting absolutely pounded on Bondi, had a few goes at boogy boarding after that which for a complete novice was way more of a laugh cos you might not be able to do turns and stuff but you can at least just hang on all the way onto the beach bouncing off heads all the way in.
Was gutted leaving Oz that I hadn't given it a proper go but was on the way to Bali so figured I could have some lessons there quite cheaply, that was until I saw the size of the waves there & the amount of Monsoon debris.... locals were all wearing helmets and other protective gear cos of the amount of branches and shiz in the water.

Being in a barrel is 1 of those things that I really wish I'd experienced

I had the right hair & everything.

btw, Skim boards when you land on them and are leaning back become the fastest thing on the planet.

Surf Chicks are also of course 1 of the acest things on the Planet, possibly a little saltier but the constant Bikini Look makes up for that.

Was gonna have another go again in NZ but the water was as cold as here, and all that volcanic rock just isnt the same as pure white sand with a pair of shorts on.

Managed to do it a fair bit when I was over in Oz years ago, Freshwater Beach north of Manly was the perfect beginners beach, got myself a decent 2nd hand board (none of this 9th raft business, mine was about 8ft, quite narrow for getting a bit of speed up), and was able to practise pretty much every day after work. Loads of fun. Didn't manage to progress beyond surfing the foam to actually riding the wave before it broke, but it was still a great feeling whizzing along towards the shore. Could last a good 5+ seconds most of the time.

had a go in australia, coudnt get to stand up for more than a few seconds despite trying for weeks, boogie boards i was ok with, scared of the water now since my near drowning the other year so no chance now.

Annoyingly, I realised weeks after fruitless attempts to stay up for more than a second that by broadening my stance and having my feet further apart, my balance improved dramatically.

Grew up, and still live in, Melbourne Beach, FL (Google "Sebastian Inlet"). I spent my entire life in the water! I'll assume you're in Washington by your user name. I've heard there's a big community of surfers up there, and in the Vancouver area. I've met some of them while doing our yearly Costa Rica / Dominican Republic trips. Welcome, man!

Used to surf a bunch out in Australia for the few years i was there, got decent at it. Broke my ankle and never surfed again oddly enough. Had a nice board too, its just sitting in me mum's basement. Feel bad for it..
