Summer clearout

so we get rid of 7 players, and you want to replace them with younger, proven, better players.

How much do you think that would cost?!
How would the team gel over a summer?
Do you remember what happened to QPR?

To me it's just bonkers to suggest we move on such a large amount of players all at once. We need to be patient and bring in 2 or 3 quality players a season in a combination of loans/signings.

Yes it might take 3 or 4 years but that's the way we have to do it.

Pienaar's been a good player for us but since the start of last season he's done nothing. Unfortunately I think he's done.

I hope not. I think Pienaar is one of the most underrated players we've had in the past 10 years and as he never relied on pace will be around for a while to come yet.

Oh, first game of the season against Leicester he was immense, 2nd game injured!

He was on 5k a week at Wigan, and we doubled his wages.

I know someone at Wigan.
5k a week for an international player is bonkers. Not that 60k a year is to be sniffed at like, but I'd wager that we've got lads playing for the u-21's on more than that.

Must be grim knowing you've got lads doing the same job as you, earning in a week what you get in a year.

Don't think Alcaraz or Pienaar will go yet tbh. If they keep fit they can do a job.

Distin, Howard and Osman are the only ones that definitely need to go I'd say.

60k a year? Not sure your maths is right there mate.. lol

We lose eight players out of the squad and replace them with what ?
Our squad at the very least needs to be as big as it is
We need to be able to sign players that can immediately play in the first team rather than spend whatever budget we have signing God knows who
to fill up the numbers in the squad again.

What will happen over the next two or three seasons is that we will lose maybe three players from the squad each summer. It will be controlled change allowing academy players to move into the squad(if they are good enough) and also bringing two or three new faces each year.

No massive kneejerk clearout .

I'm looking for an appropriate emoticon for the OP in here

There it is.
lol lol

I predict soft arse giving Distin, Alcaraz and Howard new improved 4 year contract extentions, renaming us Bobs Army, Walmington-on-Mersey sports division, changing sponsorship from Chang to Seven Seas cod liver oil capsules, and the players coming out to "who do you think you are kidding mr.Kenwright?"
lol lol lol

Outs
  • Distin £55k
  • Alcarez £30k
  • Howard £50k, £2m fee (MLS)
  • Pienaar, £50k, £2m fee (Hull or someone)
  • Osman, £45k (if he retires with this injury)
  • Hibbert, £40k, £1m fee
  • Eto'o £60k (already gone), £1m fee
  • Atsu - £30k

The cruel reality is that we're too loyal to players who have'nt repaid the club or fans by winning them some silverware :-(

Atsu was a loan signing - it has'nt worked out so thanks and off you go back to Chelsea

Distin is well past it now, this season time caught up with him so bye thanks for the service :-)

Howard has had bad season but is just a "good" keeper! If he goes its not life ending :-) even Robles has come on when he got a run of games

Alcarez - been injured a lot, he cost nothing to sign and he can be thanked and let him go back home for his last player contract :-)

Pienaar - good servant but with injuries etc we'll see if he'll ever be the same :-( Whatever happens he knew fans loved him!

Osman - love him or hate him Leon has conned a living as a professional footballer off us :-) For ever 1 good game he disappears for 9! Retire and go into coaching for him hopefully

Hibbert - Honest player that time forgot :-) Deserves to see out his last contract ( which was too long ) and maybe go into coaching?

Eto'o - Gone :-) maybe had attitude? but not used how he should have been

Martinez has huge summer to either sign players in younger to reduce squad age or let academy lads get game time :-) Bosmans that were coming this summer would have been announced in january I'd presume so don't be expecting lots of free transfers :-(

Browning and Galloway are replacements for older Distin/Alcarez?

Hibbert - Is John Joe Kenny acceptable as 2nd choice/back up? Browning and Stones are :-)

Howard - Robles did alright but We need a good ambitious keeper ! and thats going to cost :-(

Wingers :-( We need to buy plain and simple :-( No luck or sign of good academy lads who could play in premiership?

Its easy to say and use excuses of thats too many players to remove and we don't have time to do it in one go but if Southampton could do it this summer, as they signed the right charactors, why can't we? And thats where Kenwright and board rarely / never backing the manager in transfer windows! their happy to stay in premiership but us as fans want to win and will put higher expectations on the team :-)

I think the thing people forget about getting rid of players (especially those on high wages) is that you've got to actually find a club that want them.

Infact out of that list i can't see more than Distin moving on, maybe Hibbert moving into coaching, Atsu most likely back to chelsea and obvs etto already gone.

Howard, Osman, Pienaar and most likely alcaraz will all still be here next season. With the first 3 rightly so imo.

Think there's more chance of Gibson, Miralass and McGeady being gone by next season. Oh and Barry, who I think will seek the American Ritirement home.

Most realistic post so far. Howard & Osman will definitely be with us next season, Pienaar possibly but I'm not sure, and Hibbert will be if he's not forced to retire.

Distin is definitely leaving and I've got a funny feeling Alcaraz will be offered another year to make the numbers up at the back. Unless Atsu plays a blinder from now until the end of the season, he'll be going back to Chelsea. I actually think Gibson will be kept on, unless he just keeps on breaking down from now on until the end of the season.

I don't think McGeady will be going either, unless we've got another wide player lined up to sign in the summer, which I hope we have as he's dog Sh!te. Mirallas is the funny one for me. Says he's happy with us, but how happy? I think if a club like Athletico Madrid comes calling, he'll go, team from Spain, gonna be in CL, everything he wants before his career is over!

We have got a good back four and a decent spine of the team on paper, we just need tweaks here and there to make us a really good 1 to 11 as a whole! Hopefully Martinez sees this and sorts it this summer. Last summer was about continuity according to the gaffer, and it hasn't really worked out, so changes need to be made for us to be in a position to achieve Martinez's future goals, which is qualifying for the CL!

Yes it might take 3 or 4 years but that's the way we have to do it.

The point is that the 7 or so players that he is suggesting that we get rid of are contributing next to nothing, and it is costing us over one million pound a month to pay 7 or so players to contribute feck all.

I don't think we will need to replace every single one of those players as they aren't actually contributing anything. What we do need to do, is get rid of them and use the 1.2 million pound a month on 2, 3 or 4 high quality players that could contribute a great deal.

I got told Pienaar was on 73k a week, and I very much believe it. He only left Everton because we refused to pay him the same wage as Arteta (75k a week), Spurs matched his wage demands, and I don't think he agreed to reduce his wage by 25k a week just to re-join Everton.
