Strange ref decision

I was watching a game today and an incident got a good discussion going in the pub.

The attacker crossed the ball and the defender cleared the ball away from goal only to hit the ref and go out of play for a corner?

Except he then gave a goal kick.

How could it be a goal kick if the last player to touch it was the defender?

We can't get to the bottom of it. Anyone heard of that happen before and what did the ref give?

You should learn to never question refereeing decisions.

Or in other words, I don't have a ******* clue.

IIRC the issue is whether the referee has affected the situation sufficiently - since the only reason the ball went out is because it hit the ref, then a goal kick was the correct decision.

i do know that if it hits the ref and goes in the net the goal should stand, how this helps i don't know but ive no got a clue. Don't care either, had a gallon of cider

I always believed the ref was purely neutral like the woodwork so it should of been a corner.

So it should have been a goal kick? Why not a drop ball where it hit the ref? A goal kick is such a random decision.
