Just read this on TEF and have to say that there is merit in this, IMO.

Piennar, if fit, could play the creative role. I've been thinking that with all of the young talent we have that an older head might be good to pull things together in a similar way that Cantona did at United. I'm not saying that Piennar is the answer but he could definitely do the job.

Maybe a few years ago but it's hardly reasonable we can expect an injury plagued 32 year old to transform the team.

Anyway, he'd still be isolated as McCarthy and Barry stand on the half way line passing to each other. I'm convinced we've got a lack of creativity due to our system rather than the players available.

....his lack of games over the past season or so has probably had a more significant impact than we think. It is true that you only really understand how good somebody is when they are no longer there. A fully fit and firing Pienaar is a mighty fine footballer, it's doubtful we will ever have that for a lengthy run of games.

he was never our best player when he was fit, i don't see why he'd be it now when he's slower and not as good.

I think hes class. We could do with him now as he actually moves off the ball, and was brilliant at still wanting the ball even when under pressure and he'd always win us free kicks too ha

i think you're imagining a better player than he is / was

very good player but severe lack of end product effected him.

He's always been 'quite good' but never class for me.

Baines made him look better than he was too.

Likewise he made baines look better.

Injuries have took some gloss of the memory, but to say he was never class is a bit insulting, easily one of the best players we've had in the past decade or more with the likes of arteta and baines, even still when on the pitch now he looks one of our most assured players.

As for lack of final ball, not got the figures to hand but he was always up there in the assists for us, not to mention the amount of times he assisted the assister which would be through the roof
