That's not the case - Martinez rotated that side knowing full well he was weakening his chance of progression in the tournament by doing so. The focus wasn't on selecting the best side, it was selecting the most convenient with an eye towards the next game and an eye towards keeping the fringe players happy and giving them game time.

He'd have wanted the win, sure, but he wasn't willing to achieve it at all costs.

At this point we're arguing about something neither of us have any chance of knowing. The mindset of a man we've never talked to.

Aye I badly worded that; point badly expressed there, I meant it's diminishing in terms of importance due to other commitments for top clubs. So the correct wording would be "The FA Cup isn't as much of a big deal as it has been historically".

Not really, his mindset is obvious by his team selection. If he wanted to win the competition, he'd have picked a first team side. I mean, sure, if you want to be definite about things, you can't be 100% certain that was his approach and there's a very remote chance that he genuinely thought that side tonight was the very best means of winning the game and progressing in the tournament, but realistically....

Hmm... Good point. I think it wasn't a priority for him as he wanted to keep his side in the league, but as they progressed it became obvious that he couldn't ignore it and gave it a full whack.

Well, you never know then I guess. I personally doubt Martinez was willing to go all out to win the League Cup this year, but each to their own.

That said, Wigan went out a round later than us in the League Cup and won the FA Cup, so it's not the end of the world. His team selection tonight will not reflect on his approach to the FA Cup.
