I was just thinking, we have no player wearing the number 1 and 9 shirts. How [Poor language removed] strange is that? Why is Yak not wearing 9 and how is Howard not wearing number 1?????

I thought that with our stance on being a British club, those numbers would be taken.

Thoughts?

Well, I think Yak is making a good case for it.

As for other teams, I hate the fact the have cheapened the value of certain squad numbers. I know Moyes has acknowledged the importance of the number 9 previously.

Just think it is strange to see us without a 9 and a 1.

Apparently players arent that arsed any more. I believe Yak was offered #9 but wanted a number that doubles as a goal target for the year. I think T-Ho was offered #1 but kept the number he had- although as an American I guess he see's squad numbering from a different perspective anyway.

I agree I still think certain "big" numbers could be great incentives, at least for local players - I can imagine Vic and Vaughan eyeing up the number nine shirt greedily at the moment

While we're on this subject I think VDM has #7 - lets take it off him!

I know, he doesn't deserve the number 7 shirt. The first 11 should be the first choice 11 if you ask me.

i'm really not too familiar on it, but you mentioned there's a difference between the way american's and the british look at numbering, what is the difference?

Traditionally the British way was your first eleven on the day were given the 1-11 shirts, with each number representing your position on the pitch whereas the Americans tend to assign a player a squad number at the start of the season, which you held till the next.

Well, we have to force Howard to wear the #1 next season, as for #9 we just have to find Striker to wear and it doesn't look like it will be Yaks, he like his number to be big, and aim to score that many goals in a season.

The number 9 shirt should be given to strikers who earn it (y)

Not given to anyone like Steve Sidwell whos Chelseas number 9.
Its a stepup from Khalid Boulahrouz

Howard said some crap about him not caring what the number on his shirt is, he just wants to do his best - thats a pathetic reason though, just take the damn number 1!

i think yak declined the #9 because he wanted #20, which is (i think) his lucky number. he had #20 at pompy and brough but couldnt get it here because pienaar already had it.

#9 should be retired in honour of James Beattie personally.

Howard said he had a good season and wanted to keep number 24.

In most American sports players choose there own numbers to do with personal reasons - superstitions, lucky numbers, relevance to family members/idols etc.

I believe Jordan's number was chosen as a reference to his father. He originally wanted 45 (the number he used after his first retirement), but couldn't have that in high school/college so took 23 instead (45/2) and carried that into the NBA. Lebron James then choose 23 as his number, in reverance to Jordan. Gilberto Arenas wears 0 as he was told in his college years that he had no chance of making the NBA.

The only American sport that i know that is similar is American Football, where QBs are generally numbered between 1-20, and Special Teams (eg field goal kickers) are 50-59. Not sure on the ranges for other positions tho.

I dont think the sqaud numbers are significant, i have noticed in recent years that even untraditional squad numbers can be associtated with a cultish stature at a club. Like at united you think 16 you think Keane!
