So, it's here again. The curse of a summer ending with an odd number is over, with not even an international football tournament to ease your pangs.
Time to fiddle with the league ladders and decide how weird it looks like with Everton at the top. Time to purge Geelong and assorted other weird names from the coupons. Time to buzz off wearing a t shirt to the match and not having to take a jacket. Time for your bird to start fuming over your weekend bi polar tendencies.
It's been a sadly predictable summer in terms of no new faces in to freshen a team in need of it. So we'll have to work with what we've got, and Ross Barkley. More on him later.
A tough first game awaits in North London against Spurs. Led by the lazy lidded Redknapp they have established themselves in the top six and have an array of good players. They've only seen Friedel arrive in the the market so far this summer but are never short of a bob or two. Much of their focus has been trying to retain the services of Modric - who looks likes a lesbian daughter offspring of Harry Redknapp and Gail Platt - who wanted a move to Chelsea. Good player that and one we'll have to keep under wraps if were to get anything from this game.
Other notable players - often giving Lineker, Hansen & co a lazy lob on - are Van der Vaart who looked ace then couldn't be arsed much after Christmas. Bale is sometimes quite super on the left but seemingly Phil Neville is his kryptonite, but they're generally strong all over. We done well in taking four from six points off them last season so we are capable of turning them over if we turn up on our day, as big as the ask may be. They're had an indifferent pre season cumulating in a Brighton last week and as I write this they are yet to play their final game against the Kendall stealing bastards of Bilbao.
The last game of our pre season would have give some ideas of what was in Moyes' mind for who'll start this game. Let's hope with all our might that a right wing axis of tosh of Hibbert and Neville isn't going to happen. It will be 4-5-1 and Saha will start, unless his knee explodes during the week. Anichebe has been a common theme in the pre season so must be a shoe in for a slot on the right or left of midfield, he really has much to prove this season.
No one has really stood out in pre season, with the obvious exception of Ross Barkley. Some lids just have it and he falls comfortably in his bracket. It's so nice to see a young player coming through who not only can hold his own but has the potential to thrive, and with so much attacking intent. It's doubtful he'll start but he should be given plenty of opportunities as he deserves it and were simply in dire need of someone who can produce something from the side of midfield. We have romantic notions of players coming through the academy that they, well, they just get it. Speaking of that it would be nice if Rodwell got it some time soon. As someone said to me in the pub last night "what's his best position?". I don't know, but for someone who has all the natural attributes he has it's frustrating to watch him continually play within himself. Time to step up Jack. Fellaini wonderfully glided through the midfield and looks fit to start, there is a lack of news on Arteta so you'd have to rate that one doubtful. The defence and goalkeeper, you just know.
There is an air of discontent understandably and the usual crap start to the season would be the catalyst for things to turn a wee bit more ugly. It's important Everton turn up here and provide some reminder you why you missed them in the summer.
Get into them Everton.
