Udderly delicious
Reading in today's Sunday Times "Driving" section that following UK research in to accidents, the EU are looking seriously in to fitting compulsory speed limiters to all new cars potentially from next year.
This would stop the driver from exceeding the speed limit on any given road (the limit of which could be arbitrarily changed at will).
An upside would be that speed cameras would become redundant as would a number of traffic police (possibly).

Thoughts?

work van is limited to 60(mph).

Can be a ballache when on motorway but not really an issue at all.

There are pros and cons for such technology. Reduced speed in the mainstay will reduce crashes and as such fatalities, as speed is often an issue.

However it may equally have negative side effects in a number of circumstances.

For those who live outside of the city, you're often required to overtake slow farm machinery etc. Here short bursts above the limit are required.

This may become extremely difficult, if not dangerous, if drivers are strictly limited. Equally could it now increase congestion on such roads?

It is more likely they'll begin to limit caps on certain roads, possibly 10-20% over the speed limit, to create a suitable margin.

;) Won't ever happen, car manufactures too powerful and would fight this till the death. Would kill the car industry. Imagine Liverpool without Jaguar Land Rover and the knock on effects right across the region, then multiply it across Europe.

+1

Speed, per se, doesn't kill. Inappropriate speed and inadequate car/bike skills do.
Far better to train drivers to drive well.

So why not have both?

The only problem with limiting peoples speed is that they get upset that they won't be able to imagine going how high the numbers on their speed dials are. There is no reason we have cars that can go so fast.

But in this case the illusion of free will can get you and other people killed.

You might be Ken Blocks Nephew, but you can't see round corners.

Mental to think that a car is capable of going beyond a speed limit in any event. Yes from me.

Stuck behind a slow moving vehicle and can't overtake it by staying within the speed limit? What's the hurry, you ain't going anywhere if you're dead...
