Lack of police funds could end South West speed cameras

Police say the use of fixed and mobile speed cameras has reduced road deaths
No speed cameras will operate in the South West next year, unless the government comes forward with more funding, police have warned.

Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership is being wound up with the loss of about 40 jobs.

The force is currently in talks with the Department for Transport (DfT), but a police superintendent said the future was "looking bleak".

Time for a personal story on this.

In October 2007 I was on my way to school with one of my long term mate, we went down the local shop to get some snacks for school breaktime. In our hurry to get back we crossed a road about 1/4 mile from the school. Some 18 year old in his car smashed into my friend killing him dead there. The driver was going 65 on a 30 street, the next 6 months was grieving and asking the local council for a speed camera to be put down the road he was killed on. We finally got it.

Now the amazing government we have in charge wants to cut funding so much so we have no speed cameras.

I feel sick.

******* Tories.

That is one way of looking at it, why don't you ask where all the money from Police speed camera fines goes.
Sorry for your mate, hopefully the murderer at the wheel got prison time, and that your mates family are not still completely devastated.

Sorry to hear that mate. I know all too well, how it is to lose a friend in that way.

Couldn't belive this story when i heard it. It doesn't matter that it is saving people's lives, as long as their making cuts

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you meant that BB had lost it, as in gone crazy. My bad.

Don't worry about it mate, it's just I still get emotional when remembered to that sad day. Still see my parents mate from time to time and their life is forever ruined. Don't need dickheads like him, coming on here making stupid remarks. If he read the story posted by Number25 he should've realised that not everyone dying in a speed accident is a culprit. There are innocent victims too.
