Southall Interview in The Guardian

Well, if the pic's recent, it looks like he's slimmed down a bit which is good to see. He's Nev and he can do what he wants but it's hard for a teenager to take coaching advice seriously if you look like you're downing endless boxes of Jaffa Cakes on the side; never mind the fact that they're mush-brained teens and never saw you play.

Saw him a couple of seasons back signing his book upstairs in the church. Best player I've ever seen, but looks like he's been eaten by a fat bloke these days. Think my favourite Nev moment was in the '95 Cup Final when a 10 year old Paul Scholes tried to run through him. Nev just turned his shoulder and Scholes bounced right off. Loved Nev's little contemptuous glance down...

He's a maverick but he has an awful lot to offer still. It's excellent he has some role to offer. Of all the things we've done in the last 10 years, getting more ex blues involved is as good as any. For young players entering the club, to spend time with your Southalls, Sheedy's, Fergusans or Unsworths is absolutely essential. It continues the clubs identity and legacy, and also ensures that history is not forgotten. It's important than any employee at Everton understands what it means to play for Everton, and having such players around is key to that. I wish we could get Dave Watson back in some capacity too.

The work he is doing with young goalkeepers is fantastic. I doubt Southall would ever be enough of a club man to be a full time coach. This role seems to work for him though. Martinez certainly didn't start the use of older players at the club, but he has continued it very well. It's nice to see Royle involved, as well as Kendall visiting too.

As for what he makes of the season, I think he is spot on. It's been a [Poor language removed] season. We find out what Everton is all about next year. But what we are trying to do at Everton is correct.

A great man who has never sought to toe the party line just to gain employment.

Phil Neville was once called an "Everton legend" by Bill. Fortunately Southall transcends such a comparison.

He made the best save I've ever seen when we all but clinched the title at Sheffield Wednesday in 85, love Nev.
Nev was THE best. But the greatest save I've ever seen was by Bobby Mimms when he first came in for Southall (1986?). It was at Maine Rd, a finget tip save at full stretch from a rocket of a volley hit from only 8 yards out. Unbelievable. I thought then 'we've got a great understudy here'........

Also what about Spurs away, 3rd April 1985, unbelievable point blank stop from header, Galvin I think ,to save the win which made us uncatchable for Spurs more or less.

....he was a great goalie, no doubt about that. Not sure about anything else.

Mate there are very few people who do as much to promote small charities and good causes as Nev. Top bloke
