From what I understand, it was a robbery and a gun was used by the robbers in the commission of the crime.

South Africa has got a bad gun culture Bill, it's not regulated like the US. Sadly, it's only the tip of the iceburg in a very volatile country, especially out of the main centres. Farmers have electric barbed wire fences around their houses.

It's always scared me off going to South Africa, apologies to any of our SA posters, but Joberg has the highest rate of car jackings in the world, murder rate is astonishing, armed robbery a common occurrence.

South African here, hullo
Crazy levels of violent crime here. A person robbing someone for a cellphone will do so with a gun. Its scary.
Joburg and Durban are particularly scary, I happily live in Cape Town, its a lot better here.
All that aside, it's a brilliant country. I love it. Don't want to leave. Come visit, it's beautiful.
