From what I've been told Eggs he was pretty deadly from the spot old Roy...well found, Dario. Had to be a pen, eh.

My old man always reckoned him and dear old Alex up front were a tremendous partnership, reading Cattericks book I think Roy caused him a few headaches with his off the pitch activitieslol.....he was Dario, not sure what his record is but he was considered an expert. Remember watching him, he was a chain smoker apparently lit up as soon as he left the pitch and continued smoking in the shower. I'm sure a few of the older guys will have more specific memories than me but he was a fine player.
Think he only ever missed one pen at main road(Man City Od ground) we played Man U in the charity shield, we being the champs it was played at GP,we had a pen Roston scored and the ref made him take it again, in fact it was retaken 3 times, everyone just inside Gaskill's right post,it said in the Echo the next day that Gaskill gave the ball to Royston after the 2nd attempt, and asked him where he was going to put it ? Royston replied same place. Which he did, he was lightening over the first ten yards, which seemed to give him the edge, great player, and marvellous understanding with The Golde Vision......he was Dario, not sure what his record is but he was considered an expert. Think he scored 19 from 20
Looks like we won 4-2,must have been a decent trip mate!!,better than most of my trips to WHL,although I was there in 1985 when we virtually secured the titleCheers I was at that game, long forgotten. Well done for finding it.

Was that Alex Scott on the right wing? My abiding memory of Vernon is watching him many times stand on the edge of the penalty box, waiting to slot home a cut back from either wing. He was a top slotter. Catterick used to send someone to drag him out of the Royal Tiger(only oldies will remember !) on a Friday night. Roy would sit at the bar with an orange juice in front of him and his 'real' drink on a little ledge under the bar. We had an assortment of left wingers when Eglington went to Tranmere and the ones who played with Vernon...he made their lives a misery. One in particular, a young lad named Ray Veall, Vernon practically had him in tears complaining about his poor crosses and cut backs. And I still say he was wrongly given offside when we 'scored' against Inter...went to Milan for the second leg...Colin Harveys debut, and lost to a Jairzhino(?) goal. Drove there in a mini, three of us. Incredible !!
Assortment of left wingers in a few short years, if my memory serves me...Jimmy Fell, Bobby Laverick, Eddie OHara, Ray Veall, Mickey Lill etc.
