Soft defenders

We've been looking for tough tackling midfielders since for years. We now have 3: McCarthy, Barry, and Besic.

What we don't have is nasty, hard defenders. Jags and stones are a good partnership but they lack that mean streak that every other team in the leage have.

Distin's game was all about pace (he's past it) Stones is great at playing out from the back, but is still young and learning. Jags isn't good at either and all 3 are poor/average in the air.

Time to train them to get nasty or bring someone in who will lead from the back.
I don't think our midfield is particularly tough tackling though. We tackle less than anyone according to the stats. That might change if Barry is booted out and Besic and McCarthy play together though.

The Spanish conman is to busy playing Naismith and Sammy Ets on the wing.

Those two fully fit would see the back for look a bit stronger

Unfortunately with Distin and Alcaraz at the back we have a relegation style defence

Yes you can't argue with that stat.

However there were games where the opposition attackers had mares...missing nailed on chances after we'd been cut open - Chelsea home, spurs home both should have been 3 up by the break and Norwich home when they missed two sitters before Barry opened the scoring.

If you are going to use goals against as a stat then I am just saying that other variables may contribute to the outcome.

It's not just about the back 4, top teams defend from the front. Perhaps the fact we don't press as much this year as we dis last year.

And yet not addressed in the summer

Good defenders seem to be a dying breed. Utd arsenal and the RS all look very poor defensively as well as ourselves. Chelsea are using an over the hill John Terry and city only have 1 quality centre back. Im really struggling to think of any decent centre backs that we could afford.in england anyway

Stones and Distin are brilliant in the air tbf mate.

I wouldn't say Stones is brilliant in the air just yet, I think he could be in future though because of his height. It's only this season I've noticed he gets out jumped quite a bit. Anyone else notice? (He's been injured loads I know)

I agree with the shawcross shouts but doubt we'd get him. Think we just need to sort ourselves out and man up!!
