Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian
The Unobstructed View
Got called out earlier to a job (which took minutes to complete tbh) and it's an Old Gentleman, I choose that description as anything else wouldn't be fair on the chap, in his late 80's and full of chat.
Job's done and he says, "come with me, there's something I'd like to show you that I don't usually show to people... but I like you... in my cellar.
Now as I say he was late 80's but if he's got a vintage glok in the pocket of his tweed jacket then it doesn't matter how old he is really, BUT down to the depths we went. We get down there and he's got to about his mid-teens in his life story, very much going off on tangents all over the shop, a bit like the Old Guy on The Fast Show with bit's of Latin, Italian & French thrown in for good measure.
We get to a point in his life where he tells me he had a wine shop and would travel to Southern France just to acquire a bottle.... a single bottle as there were in 1 instance only 2 produced. So he's a bit of a Vino Collector me thinks.
Anyway, his cellar is chocka with wooden crates of Vino with the years on them Châteauneuf-du-Pape
being 1 I instantly recognise, and he starts looking around grabs a bottle and says "Is That 96?" so I squint at it and say, "No, it's 1999 the year that my daughter was born." "Really, in which case I must give you this and you must put it aside to toast a joyous occasion in the future, like when she gets married or something, IT IS a very Special bottle and also Vintage so put it somewhere that it won't get spoiled, a nice cool place, if you look for it on the internet you won't find it, not THAT year."
Hmmm, sounds like a decent 'tip' from the arl fella.
Then he proceeds to dig around and finally finds another bottle that he says is, "For you and Your Wife to enjoy."
Now, I was down there in the cellar for about an hour, and missed the 1st 50 minutes of our friendly BUT he was right, I can't find 1 of them for sale online, in fact some wine community only had 18 bottles listed as owned by its members and 11 of those have been supped, not for sale anywhere either.
As I say.... Not a Bad Tip !!
the Vino was this one, about £19 a bottle
and the champers that I couldnt locate was this.....
Comte de Lantage 1999 Champagne, Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs.
So, anyone know if just French Pomagne like, that I should just swig in a moment of thirst ?
