How did that happen? Seems like only last year I was buying Dexys and Bunnymen records and getting ready to go to University for three years (I had Liverpool University as my insurance offer but did too well and so went to Durham instead - gutted at first because I'd not be able to go to Goodison every fortnight but I loved Uni in the end). Ran a few pubs after Uni, got married (to an Asian girl - sorry Nik) then divorced. Retrained as a teacher; moved to London; lived it up then settled down - got married again (to an Eastern European girl - sorry Nik) - found happiness. Seen Everton win two League titles (I vaguely remember 1970 but no details), The CWC, a couple of FA Cups, a hatful of Charity Shields. Still seeth about Heysel; cried about Hillsborough and Bradford. Cheered on Franz Klammer and Eddie the Eagle; Tom Watson and Seve; Ovett, Coe and Cram; Colin Jackson and the 4x100m relay team at the 91 World Championships; McEnroe and Agassi (happy birthday, Pat Cash, by the way); Enjoyed France in 84; England (Everton!) in 86; Gazza and Lineker in 90; Shearer and Gazza in 96. Been to Buenos Aires, Kiev, Kansas City, Madrid (many, many times!), Budapest, Prague, New York, Charlotte, Lison, Porto, Cadiz, Granada, Sevilla, Glasgow....

....Live in London, maybe go back to Liverpool one day....

Seen The Smiths (utterly stunning), Isaac Hayes, Wreckless Eric, Candi Staton, Desmond Dekker, the world premier of Brian Wilson's SMiLE, Arthur Lee perform Forever Changes with horn and string section, Bunnymen doing Ocean Rain, Lloyd Cole doing Rattlesnakes. Chatted backstage with Glen Matlock and had songs dedicted to me by Pete Wylie. Danced onstage with the Airborne Toxic Event when Gosling scored. Watched operas at the Kings Head, Islington. Eaten oysters and snails and Polish tripe soup; been to beer and cider festivals and sampled the freebies in the bodegas of Jeréz and Porto. Seen prohibition plays and drunk cocktails in fake speakeasys; read Chandler and Cervantes and F Scott Fitzgerald. Lost my dad.

Happy birthday to me! Here's to the next 50.........
Happy 50th and congratulations for living such an interesting life. Hopefully many more memorable days for you are still to come

I'll be honest I thought people only lived that long in the Bible.

Main question mate - after congratulations ofcourse - is...is your weiner still working?

Any advice for a 23 year old sir?

Yeah, get out there and see it for real - TV does not tell the truth. Question everything, including the things you believe in. Accept that you're sometimes wrong and so is your government. Listen to the rebellion and the sex in pop music, not the melody and emoting. Be prepared to like things you might hate right now: olives; opera; oysters; Laurel and Hardy - that sort of thing. Be true to yourself - don't let yourself be hypnotised by The Man - he wants you not to care. Support Everton. Always mutter "tossers" under your breath whenever you see an LFC shirt. Believe in art and its ability to speak to us about ourselves. If you're ever accused of being "bitter," reply with "Stop bringing up Heysel." Never trust politicians but never give up on politics - if you do, they win. Never vote Conservative / republican. Give a home to a couple of cats.
