Smalling red card

Agreed that he was stupid to get a second yellow card, but why did he get the first one? Aren't you allowed to try and block a clearance from the goalkeeper any more? Balotelli did it on Saturday against Newcastle without getting booked.

According to the Guardian mbm

65 mins: “Can you perhaps clarify the rules on blocking the keeper?” asks John Zhu. “So Smalling stood in front of the keeper but didn’t really touch him. Doesn’t that mean any keeper can just boot the ball right next to an opposition defender and get them sent off?”

This seems to be the relevant section of the laws, though it doesn’t say a booking is mandatory.

81 mins: “I’m a referee, and was in an education session a few years ago where this kind of situation was discussed,” writes Colman O’Meara of Smalling’s first booking. “We were instructed that a caution is required, as blocking a keeper in this way comes under “acts in a manner which shows a lack of respect for the game.” - pg 123 of Laws of the Game.”

He was a complete idiot, I just don't know what he was thinking. He actually had a really good game against Chelsea but has tossed that away now.

Don't think he was which is the real problem.

Was the sort of tackle you would expect from Jones, Smallling is usually a bit less impulsive.

Don't think any of Jones, Smalling or Evans have impressed LVG either with their injury records or performances. Guess the latter two might be on their way at the end of the season unless there is a dramatic improvement.

Never a yellow for that. If he'd been going around the pitch prior to that attempted block and the ref pointed all over the pitch where he'd been acting daft looking for a yellow and finally was pushed too far, you can understand it. As far as I'm aware though he wasn't transgressing like that.

It is akin to Best stealing the ball from Banks mid kick out, and I think Henry did it a fair few years ago too (and was booked). It's about keeping the flow of the game going and not hassling the keeper who otherwise won't kick the ball out and so keep hands on it - then you have oppositions screaming time wasting.
Yellow card was deserved along with the Shelvey first yellow. And in both cases the second yellows were far more agreeable/palatable yellow cards.

It's all a nonsense anyway because 'superb sunday soccer' didn't turn into all that. Sell sell sell.

I wasn't disputing the fact that he was stupid to get the second yellow card, the point I was trying to make was that he was booked the first time for doing something other players do and get away with, standing in front of the keeper and trying to deflect the clearance. He didn't touch the keeper did he?

Okay, why should anyone not be allowed to stand their ground if its not a dead ball situation and not inside the opposition box?

Maybe he was inside, I forget, but honest question here, why should a Goalkeeper be allowed to Police the area OUTSIDE his box?

Surely he can take two steps back and kick it?? FFS still Smalling was a total wally for both of them there.
