To be fair you really shaded this argument to suit your needs. If we're being fair and full disclosure it's a decade plus for donovan in a vastly inferior league that is only now gaining a bit of respect. Meanwhile Demps has been top scorer or second tops 5 years running at fulham. Say what you want abut fulham but they've finished in the top half two of the last few seasons and had a europa league final. That includes seasons missing much time through injury and seasons where new managers didn't start him for a bit of the season. One of only four men in the PL with 6 or more goals 5 years running. Your biggest poor attempt at a comparison was saying down to rating fulham over mls when if being fair it's rating league to league. PL over MLS. Not club over league. Not saying I don't rate donovan. He's exceptional but to paint Donovan as so vastly superior to Dempsey is just not so.
280+ goals & assists for club and country = LD
100+ goals & assists for club and country = CD
Even if you discount for the level in MLS, the numbers are staggering.
And the assist stat for Landon is misleading. If you watch his games and see the countless flubs by our USMNT forwards and MLS forwards it's painful. He should be well over 300 if he played more with forwards at his class.
I have done quite a bit of research on the stats. Taking it from 2004 onwards, removing some of the CONCACAF powder puff games, taking a look at scoring rates...stat story remains the same.
I never said that LD is "vastly superior" to Clint Dempsey. I have specifically said I rate them as #1 and #2 American players of ALL-TIME. And I have nothing against Fulham. But some folks act like by having Clint play for Fulham he's playing for Man U. And though he's had a solid few years, it's been 2011/2012 where he's broken through. And WOW has he broken through.
What I meant by folks rating Dempsey over Donovan is that they do indeed discount LD's MLS service by calling it an inferior league. It is. But folks do NOT recognize the extent of LD's service in that league, and imo they discount his international play when comparing to Clint. Plus, MLS is not as bad as folks makes out.
It all comes down to what you value more, club over country. People who value the EPL more tend to pick Clint. I value country, the more well-rounded play (LD scores AND creates) and the stats. So to me, it's no contest who is #1.
My opinion, but I'm not "shading" anything. I have the numbers to back it up.
