Trying to a holiday there this year and never been probably last week in Aug/First week in September, wanted some beach and some city, also considering a ferry to Naples as never been, any help most welcomed and don't mind going a little off the beaten track or less touristic if there is such a thing in Sicily.

Also thought about northern Greece as I think the Greeks are awesome people just found the hotels in Greece a little more expensive which surprised me.

Yes been twice, go to the East side and stay in Catania. From there you can go to Syracuse, Mount Etna, Godfather filming locations and it’s close enough to get to the mainland. Palermo is obviously the bigger city and more to do in one location but you’re stuck there and it’s quite hard to get across to the mainland. You’d possibly do the main attractions in about 2 days. The trains aren’t the greatest neither if you wanted to branch out from Palermo, majority of the tracks were built during WW2 and they haven’t been updated.

Also the water at the beaches in Catania is amazing, it’s always warm because the magma underneath Etna heats the seabed.

This … is an Infirmia !!

When I first went I was at a place called Naxos on the east side. I had trips out to Catania, Syracuse and Taormina. Also it was the time when Etna was erupting and on an evening you could see the mountain and the glow of the lava from our hotel Balcony.
Second time I went to Cefulu in the north West, had a trip out to Palermo, if you go there you must visit the catacombs and see hundreds of dead bodies hanging around

Amazing, thanks for your reply, you have sold me on Catania, Syracuse looks nice. Is Sicily expensive mate?

Few years back we stayed in Cefalu on the north coast. Easy to explore with a train line into Palermo and along to the islands off the north coast. Hired a car and drove into the interior and out to the west coast. Loads of history, culture, wine and sunshine.

If you go and you are in the right part (Cefalu or nearby) don't miss the opportunity to walk up Stromboli (active volcano) as the sun sets. You'll need a guide and accommodation for the island and you get up to the top near midnight. Guide leads you down and you'll see why he or she was needed when you go back on the ferry the next morning.
Added: when we went, the hike up must have been a bit later than on those pics, as the sun was setting when you turned a corner and saw the glowing stream of red lava going down into the sea. Then at the top it was pitch black and you were just looking down into the crater bubbling.
NB. Watch your gear on public transport. I have no pics from that trip as my old school much-loved Nikon was nicked off a train on the way to Palermo.
