Should you support your national team?

Yes and also support the country that your parents were born in too.

My British Asian mates, support England at footy / rugby , but support Pakistan / India at cricket, as they grew up watching cricket with their dads / uncles.

How very bigoted and nationalist of them.

I just don’t understand why people supporting a team for geographical reasons is so strange, that still hasn’t been explained. Literally the entire world does it.
Just because its common doesnt make it a strange trait. It's something people just "do". Human nature I suppose. Maybe it's odd for me because I am not English but have lived here my whole life so I do not feel as much affinity to the place (or any place).

Just to clarify the club thing though, people tend to support the same club as those around them as opposed to the closest club to them (in most cases both will result in the same club anyway).

Ignoring the not being English thing, I have no affinity to England because I was not brought up on them, I didnt go the games, my family didn't go the games, England (as in the team) has always felt like this distant thing based mainly down in London. I don't support Scotland either even though technically that is my nation because of the same reasons.

I feel part of Everton. I have never felt part of the other two. I am not kocking anyone who does feel the reverse either though.

i really liked them 96 onwards, but then lost interest in them so much from around 2002 onwards, that i stopped all together.

they are a lot more likeable now but i'm not going to waste any energy on supporting another football team. i'd rather support none as it is.

Should be a poll really.

A question is, if you don't support your country in football then what else do you side against your country about?

Politics? War?

I'd imagine it used to be John Terry and Stevie Me. Now it's Jordan bloody Henderson.

The only cup I want to see above his head is a large, heavy thing with razor sharp edges, preferably attached to some kind of guillotine that I'm holding the release mechanism for.

I'd like England to win the world cup but I'm not losing any sleep over it. The last time I got upset over England was when they didn't qualify for USA 94. I still blame Elton John.

If you have half an hour spare to listen to a podcast then the one in the first post addresses a lot of the hesitancies that some of us on the left have with supporting a national team.
