I would say Valdes or Cech... but wages and their want to join the team is another thing entirely.
Fan of Butland and Begovic, Butland probably the easier get for us.
The Aussie in me says go after Matty Ryan

NOT IN THE MARKET FOR AL-HABSI!!!!

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-fc-not-market-ali-8388009?

Everton FC are scouring the market for a new goalkeeper but the Blues won’t swoop for Wigan Athletic’s Ali Al-Habsi this month.

First-choice shot-stopper Tim Howard is likely to be sidelined for another five weeks, with a calf injury meaning Roberto Martinez has just one senior keeper in his squad.

Joel Robles will start in goal against West Ham United on Tuesday night in Everton’s crunch FA Cup third round tie, although Martinez is looking to bolster his options in that position.

But the ECHO understands that Al Habsi, 33, is not under consideration despite reports linking the Blues with a loan move for the Oman international.

Realistically we could get Mannone for cheap. We don't need a world-beater in my opinion, just someone competent enough to put Howard under pressure. We can look to replace Howard in the summer, but I don't think that should be the priority in the short January window (especially with the glacial pace that our club does business).

When Mignolet was at Sunderland I rated him, and even though I knew he would never live up to that price tag I thought he would be decent for them, so I'm probably not the best authority on goal keepers. That episode does show that spending big on a keeper is risky, and I would be weary of breaking the bank on Begovic when we have huge holes in our squad that need to be filled immediately.

We need a first choice keeper now or we will keep losing points this season.

It could make a difference in prize money which oays for the signing itself.

I like the sound of karius.

List of goalkeepers we should consider for long term , most have been posted anyway and in that order too.

Guillermo Ochoa = Malaga (Interested in the past)
David Marshall = Cardiff
Maksym Koval = Dinamo Kiev(Interested in the past)
Loris Karius = FC Mainz

How are people interpreting Martinez's comment about "long-term"? I glean only 2 meanings:

1. Someone of a decent age to come in now as number #1 and hold that place for the next 5+ years a la Neto, Marshall etc.
2. Someone young to come in and eventually be our number #1 like Joel was meant to be a la Karius, Butland, Nicholls

Personally hope it's scenario 1.

Just reach into the lower leagues and buy a good 22-25 year old ffs. All these foreign tits. It can't be so difficult to find someone in the Championship or League 1 who'll stop shots, bollock defenders, collect crosses and who is ok with the ball at their feet.

Sod it. I'll play there for a bag of chips a week, Bobby.
I'll even bring me own gloves and wash me own kit promise

I agree with you, I think we need a top goalkeeper. I've harboured the view for a long time really. I think Howard when younger was a decent solid goalkeeper who didn't do a lot wrong. He kind of suited us as a team. We were a side that punched above our weight a bit and finished in the top 6 but never threatened.
Howard was an important part of that. Until the last couple of years (particularly this season) it's hard to think of many mistakes he has made. However ask yourselves how many games can you remember that Howard won us? How many big saves in big matches has he made? It sounds harsh but if we want to go onto the next level, we need to look at a goalkeeper like Nigel Martyn in his prime.

This season Howard has started making lots of mistakes, so I am loathed to sign someone to put pressure on him. I think we need to show some ambition. It will be very costly to buy such a goalkeeper but over and above any position on the pitch I would be willing to spend it. I think with Stones, McCarthy, Barkley and Lukaku we have a young spine of a team who can develop, but we need someone behind them.

I would even be prepared to sign a young goalkeeper who while not the finished article has potential to be. Imagine how De Gea was when he first came. Or how Southall was when he first signed.

Karius fits the bill for this. (I really would have loved De Stegen). Has anybody actually seen us linked with him?

Not seen any Karius links in this window but pretty sure there have been in the past. Personally him or Jack Butland for me; been really impressed with him at Birmingham and more recently at Derby. Also keeps our nice English/Irish spine going (minus Rom).
