Player Valuation: £60m
It's an essay I know, but if you can be arsed I'd like to know whether I'm chatting complete bollocks or whether there's anyone (at all) out there who agrees with me still.
I always had faith in a Moyes everton team to turn things around. Unfortunately this squad (probably) isn't up to it. It's weak, stale and every new player coming in (bar Drenthe) just illustrates the fact that we're heading down hill.
The Moyes Out brigade as they're so called have been in full voice today which is fair enough as it's each to his own and I would understand that if all I had to go on was a list of our results since the start of the season. However, while watching the game today I was less disenchanted about the first XI than I was the whole squad.
Today we watched Seamus Coleman have probably the worst day at the office he's had so far. He was utterly ****e virtually from start to finish. At first I was angry at him. My first thought was: how could a premier league footballer make so many glaring errors in such quick succession? But on reflection I had to conclude that he's not a premier league footballer. Plain and simple. He's still the Irish league player we bought for 60k. A good turn of pace, attitude and an eye for goal. That's about the whole package from Seamus. Bargain buy from the manager and scouts? Undoubtedly yes. Premier league winger/full back? Almost certainly not. The same, I believe will go for Vellios once he gets good game time. Let's remember he was valued at 200k by his former employers. Will he be a bargain buy? Wouldn't put it past him. Will he be good enough to move us on? Virtually no chance.
I got frustrated at Moyes for starting Coleman at all. Why start someone who's lacking in quality so badly it makes you cringe? It's simple. He had no other choice. This squad has had gaping holes ripped into it every transfer window since 09 with virtually nothing coming in to fill the gaps but bargain basement buys such as Seamus, Vellios and Straqualursi and loan signings. It's like plugging holes in a cruise liner with chewing gum when you think of what city are spending. We've seen Lescott, Yak, Beckford, Pienaar and Arteta go in that period. Four of those names were pivotal in the fantastic season enjoyed in 07-08. Why did they leave? Either we didn't have the money to pay them or we needed the money to pay the bank. Do you think Moyes wanted to sell Beckford?
So that leaves Moyes with the thankless task of trying to put out a team made up of the skeleton of a once "successful" side and a few amateurs. Hibbert and Osman shouldn't still be starting for us and if you told us in 08 that they would we'dbe we'd have been stunned. Ossie was fantastic in 07-08 and that's great for him but ffs that was years ago we needed to move on and bring in the new arteta, the next pienaar etc. If we'd had money we would have. Of bleeding course we would have. Everyone goes on about money being important in the game nowadays because it IS. The thing is, we've got someone in charge who can do better with 2 million than many can with 10. He doesn't even have £2m to play with anymore though. He has nothing. Even when he had money it was a big deal how little we had and yet we achieved. We got that 20 goal a season striker and started spanking people 7 and 6-1 and going on fantastic european runs.
Moyes isn't waving his arms around and kicking off on the touchline because his hands are tied. (Not literally). Some people say he has given up. I say he just doesn't expect anymore. When he sees Coleman attempt to cross and the ball go out for a goal kick and Seamus end up on his ass and the camera pans to him all I see is the look of "well that's what you get for 60k". That's not his fault. He doesn't expect because he's not soft and I'm stunned at the fact that he's till willing to try to help us (albeit on 65k a week).
I don't think a more tactically aggressive manager will do anything for us other than put more strain on the accounts when he gives up and leaves himself demanding a big payoff. I guess I'm a bad, bad Moyes apologist. But if he can stay with us until that possibly imaginary day when we get a buyer, I believe we'll have an edge on the other big spenders because we have a top manager.
