Should Neville Be Captain?

His appointment as captain is something I have disagreed with since day one. I think its questionable whether he deserves a first team slot, never mind being given the privilege of captain. Whats he done in an Everton shirt to be given that armband?

Sure, people may say he's a model professional but we've got plenty other of them, an example being Lee Carsley. For a club with Everton's ambitions (top 6), I don't think Neville is anything more than a squad player, he's average at best.

Am sure many will disagree with me, but to me, he shouldn't have strolled into the squad and been made captain because he has Man Utd on his CV.

Opinions on the matter?

I don't have any problems with him being captain but if he's going to play in the side I'd much prefer he did so at right back.

i think hibbo wont get a look in next season. and that goal from neville... was it said in any commentary but where was his left foot? i might be old school.. but surely when stubbs plays he should be cpt.

lets stay off nevilles back. i like him in a blue shirt.

Agreed, if possible, I think he should play right back. He can put a good ball in from time to time.

Its not a thread to criticize Neville, but to question whether he should be captain so lilke you said, Stubbs should be captain ahead of Neville. Which I agree with.

Agree Neville should not be captain, but when we have fit players for LB and Lescott needs to move back to CB where is Stubbs then and how can he be captain.

Captain or not I don't care. What benefit does a captain bring to a team other than talking to the ref when something goes wrong. If he's a motivator to the team, it dosen't matter if he is captain or not, he'll be able to show motivation everywhere on the pitch. I don't really have a big problem with him except his passing, simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be a midfielder!

stubbs cant be captain now, local or otherwise, his outburst at moyes at the time of his move to sunderland and his part in the pro active deal with stretford mean alan stubbs is tainted goods.

dont mind him at the club, but its a 'prodigal son' role from now on.

I personally would like to see Cahill as capatain, he is everton through and through and is extremly vocal. A born winner who will fight tooth and nail for the cause.

I agree.

If Neville is not placed at right-back then he should be on the bench or at best as a centerhalf

I can understand the logic in that, BUT, cahill has this magnificent tendancy to pick up bookings. would the captaincy lessen his edge? who gets vice captain?

Yobo captains nigeria, but isnt commanding enough on the field, its a tough one this one, Howards out of the running because of his medication, its too soon for lescott, and i cant see mikel doing it.

really only leaves cahill doesnt it.

I think the players sort of nominated Neville to be captain and it was underlined by Moyes as official. Its who they will follow and who can lead. If they wan't it to be Nev, I'm happy with that.

Doesnt really work like that, the manager picks the captain and thats the end of it. There is no voting etc of that I am sure.

Of course it does. But he takes hints from his players and who influences them. I believe Weir probably had a fair bit to do with Neville becoming his vice captain also.

The only problem really is whether he deserves his place in the team. As a speaker and promoter of Everton he has always said the right things and portrayed the club well in the media. On the field he has won nearly every honour going and I'm sure that will command a great deal of respect amongst the players, regardless of his personal role in each triumph because he knows what it takes to win and that's important.

So really I can't see a problem with it. The squad at the moment seems very happy and wants to succeed and as long as that's the case and Neville is good enough to keep his place in the side then I'm happy.
