Football commentary was like that 30 years ago too. The faux excitement at every incident has been a relatively recent development in all sports.
You're right. Way back, commentators were there to tell you which player was in possession and in what part of the field for radio listeners.
If I remember rightly it was David Coleman who felt bound to make the game a bit more dramatic. The classic "Keegan...one nil!" in 1973 being a standout. Barry Davies was quite emotional too. Now you get the Oh My Word brigade who fulminate about the slightest thing.

I'm still finding it hard to compute that Warney is dead.
52.
It was only a few weeks ago that me and a couple of mates were playing a "choose your best 11 of all time" game, where you had one pick at a time and had to adhere to the rules of 'within a place in the order', so openers had to be openers, a number 3 could be a number 4 etc.
The only stipulation was that they needed to have played at the top level within your lifetime.
We haggled over first pick and mine was Shane Warne at number 8.
Second pick was Adam Gilchrist at number 7.
