Anyone know much about these things?

Basically I have been downloading tons of stuff lately, and decided to buy 3TB Memory. A lad at work suggested i get a set top media box and you can just rip to the TB and have tons of movies, music, box sets all at the touch of a button.

I also have 100's of hours of music festival footage which i would like to be able to play without having it on the laptop. Now i know the XBox pretty much does all this, but i would like to have the ability to record from the TV aswell?

Does anyone know if they are this far advanced yet?

If you mean you've got a 3TB hard drive that they are all on then if your TV has a USB socket you may be able to just play them straight off there.

Mine will play some files wont play others.

Yeah you can just set up a NAS running XBMC/WMC/DVBLogic. You can even leave it running and stream from it anywhere in the country (me and a mate watched a few minutes of The Hobbit in 1080p streamed from his house to his phone at work - though he was mainly showing off his 4G).

If you mean can you just DL stuff from your laptop and then stream it to your TV then yes, that's easy. I do it with a Raspberry pi, stream it through a network. As simple as getting a USB/HDMi cable. There are loads of ways though.

If you haven't already then have a look at XBMC - it's a smart media player. Install it onto a laptop and you can watch away.

I like the look of this, is it easy to install the RP into the telly?

I just have XBMC installed onto a micro SD card, slot that into the Raspberry Pi, then an HDMI lead from Pi to TV. Obviously your ext HD is attached to your Pi.

That sounds like a load of arsing around really.

Surely i'm achieving the same thing by playing a video in VLC player on my comp but running an HDMI lead from my comp to my TV and watching it on that?
