Set Pieces - Corners in particular

It's fine for Martinez to be the type to rather score a good pass and move goal than a corner, may aswell just take short corners. One thing he must do is put a few hours in on defending set pieces, because although we don't utilise them ourselves, plenty of other teams will.

Agree re Cahill but Fellaini frequently lost his opposing runner when defending corners
He wasn't a good man marker, but still made a big difference when defending, Cahill was fantastic in his own box, Jagileka and distin need to start taking more responsibility when defending set pieces and really make those balls their own, I'm surprised Barry isn't better at this as well, considering he was a center half

I don't think i'm going to be able to dig this out and find it, but didn't Martinez say last year that statistically only 1 in every 7 corners ends in an actual goal scoring chance for a team? Thus meaning 1 in even more actually results in a goal... idk

I found the stat I was looking for - 1 in 5 corners lead to a shot on goal. 1 in 9 shots lead to a goal, therefore there is a less than 2.25% chance of scoring from a corner.

Teams score from a corner statistically 1 in every 10 games, so corners are almost insignificant when considering the likelihood of scoring.

Anyone else think Distin is terrible in the air for his size?

Yep always thought it mate. Headers he should win he doesnt and headers he should be able to clear easily he always seems to slice straight to the opposition. Not slagging him off either as he's a cracking player on his day and his pace has certainly helped us out a lot. Yesterdays cack sliced clearance was one of those moments where you go "yep thats Distin".

It feels like we score more from open play these days so perhaps it just seems like we are worse at scoring from them as we rarely have to throw the kitchen sink at the opposition? I don't think there can be any question that Martinez spends more time drilling the players on open play and if this is the trade off then I for one am willing to accept it.

No idea why we have all turned into wet flannels when defending from set pieces though...

simple answer really, martinez doesn't care for them.

i'd like to see stones start vs arsenal tbh, think jags and distin can rotate alongside him - we need that tall commanding centre back and hopefully he can be a threat in the other box

I'm sure I've read previously that Martinez plays little credence towards corners and in my humble opinion this is his greatest weakness.
As much as I admire Martinez I think it's a touch arrogant to not practise defending/attacking corners in training or to only practise very little.

Improving on corners could make a difference with regards our ability to push into the top 4 and progressing in cup competitions.

I find it very surprising when we have big Dunc on the coaching staff that we don't seem to put some emphasis on corners.

That seems like an incredible stat. Perhaps its just how we grow up watching highlights of most matches which gives the impression of corners being more dangerous.

Agree also with the post about Big Dunc. If the average Evertonian has a moan about the current team's lack of ability in the air - imagine what he must be feeling!

we have one of the best left footed players in the league yet Baine's corners are crap he should watch some DVDS of Andy Hinchcliffe's corners whipped in with lots of pace practically under the cross bar they used to cause mayhem

I don't understand why Baines can't deliver corners. I understand even less why he continues to take them.

Didn't McGeady take a decent one yesterday? As in, he beat the first man?

Baines took one where it beat the first man, and the second... and the rest of them

We're a bit rubbish at both attacking and defending them. Defending we just don't mark properly or make an absolute hash of clearing it, and attacking them we always seem to swing them out so we've pretty much done the defence's job for them by taking it away from the goal.

I literally cannot remember the last time one of our centre back's scored a good old fashioned header from a corner, maybe Jagielka away at Spurs the season before last, bit pants really
