Player Of The Year: Coleman and McCarthy, with notable mentions for Barry, Howard and Distin, who've all been very consistent. Coleman's started and finished the season brilliantly, and had a quieter middle where he mightn't have been giving LBs fits but was fairly decent defensively. McCarthy's work in the middle of the park has allowed our two full backs to attack, and his overall commitment and attitude has been outstanding.
Young Player Of The Year: Stones or Barkley. Ross has been brilliant in flashes, and also quiet at times. His technical and physical ability is undeniable, but he still hasn't quite defined his role/position yet. One more season and we might have a truly world class player there. Stones has been excellent in his current run, and is the most composed young CB we've had here. Positionally needs to improve, but he's 19 and that will come.
Biggest Surprise Player Of The Year: So many: Oviedo not only making Baines not missed but playing so well the unthinkable conversation of whether Baines should even go straight back into the 11 came up - such a shame his season ended like it did; Naismith's not a huge surprise for me after how Martinez managed to get the best out of Maloney at Wigan - playing under a manager who'll give you specific instructions and encouragement has obviously helped, and his play and goals have been important this season; "The Substitutes": not a specific player, but watching 2nd half substitutions changing a game isn't something we're used to. Who'd have thought introducing Osman and Naismith for Mirallas and Barkley in the 70th minute would lead to winning games?
Most Disappointing Player: Don't think we've had any terrible ones, but two big players whose form has dipped slightly at certain points has been Baines and Mirallas. In both cases, though, the stylistic changes have played their part: we don't rely entirely on Baines as our attacking threat anymore, while Mirallas's role requirements seem to have left him a little confused earlier this season, he's been excellent in recent weeks.
One To Watch Next Season: I think Barkley will step on, and he's a joy to watch. The real one to watch, though, is Martinez: in ten months he's changed Evertonian perceptions from the scope of 'cautiously optimistic - suicidal' to 'cautiously optimistic - best in der werld' - which is no small thing. He has a big transfer window and pre-season ahead, where he'll be able to further change the texture of the club - the playing staff, the style, the attitude - and build on what he's so impressively done with another manager's foundations. As someone who was born at the end of Kendall's first tenure, this is the most exciting Everton of my life.
