2025/26 Seamus Coleman

Yes, and when you can't shift them, the priority should be to replace the older player who can no longer hack it rather than panic and give him another year. Spend the wages that should be freed up on someone who can contribute to the club by playing regularly.

I have no objection to being in and around the club, but it was a very strange decision to extend his contract rather than go out and find a half-decent RB.

Whether Patterson stayed or went in the summer, replacing Coleman should have been done too. I don't accept that we had to keep Coleman because we couldn't get rid of Patterson.

I agree with the last sentence, simply because Patterson has no role on this team. The situations of the players, even though they play the same position, are mutually exclusive.

I also don't think we failed to bring in a RB because either Coleman or Patterson are on the roster. Neither was ever going to be a starter, Moyes thought he had his starter and said the position was not a priority. That's why we don't have a new RB.

i remember tony hibbert and phil neville being preferred to seamus coleman, one year later he’s in the team of the season

same year barkley couldnt buy a game. the following he’s in the world cup squad and being heralded as the biggest talent in england

jake obrien couldnt get a game last year

i could go on

….still got a lot of hope that Aznou breaks through, he’s clearly not thought ready at the moment and I’m sure they’re working on those defensive weaknesses in training.

He's 19, there's some lack of perspective here because of where he came from and what our team looked like the first match of the season without a LB. I have no idea what he'll become, but he's got a lot of road ahead of him.

….he’s a proud Irishman who’s always available if his country needs him. I suspect Ireland want him around the squad for the same reasons Everton do.

So can we stop doing the “he bleeds blue he’d die for this club” thing at least? He’s a highly paid employee of the football club who clearly sees international representation as more important to him than his club, which in itself I don’t have a problem with because he’s actually from Ireland. The way people talk about his loyalty and how much he’s sacrificed for the football club is the issue I have, he’s not sacrificed anything.

….it can get too ‘romantic’ but beyond that Moyes (and those before him) think Coleman has a big role to play in the club. I don’t believe he thinks ‘international football is more important than his club’, I believe Ireland and Everton want him involved and he still wants to be involved.

That’s fine. But he’s playing for Ireland for free, would he play for Everton for free? Because people make out that he would, I’m highly dubious of that personally.

In a hypothetical world do you think he’d rather miss the rest of this season through injury, or miss the World Cup through injury in the extremely unlikely chance that Ireland qualify?
