There will be very few, if any, gay footballers. Only 6% of the population - according to government* figures - are homosexual. Which equates to 60 professional footballers in english football.

There are unlikely to be 6% of the football playing population that are gay, just as there are unlikely to be only 6% of theatre luvvies that are gay (try 96%).

It might sound a generalisation but think back to the 'camp' or any gay people you knew at school. Were they into playing football? Nah.

As a gay friend I have is quite fond of saying "Gays. We don't like football, but we looooove fashion."

It's a good point Heat. The traditional football environment certainly doesn't encourage homosexuals to take up the sport. Christ, if a happily married man like Le Saux gets stick just because he's a bit more sensitive than the average footballer or prefers a bottle of wine with his wife to a few beers with the boys, Imagine someone who was gay. As you say, 1 in 5 footballers are not gay.

Either way its a daft stat that has no proof.
