There is a story doing the rounds that he came off late in the game vs Drogheda complaining of a knock to the head. Match reports make no mention of it but Derry fans saying he just went and sat on the bench with a couple of minutes left in the game and no subs left. Looks like he went home to bed and just never woke up. Tragic if true and will certainly shine the light on the lack of head injury protocol in football

So young, very sad this sort of thing, especially for the family, they have my sympathies.
Not unknown though and no protocol, short of a full scan right away and maybe not then, would be effective.
You could bang your head in innocent circumstances - reaching under the table, anything, no hospital, no concussion, scans etc; just a sore head and a dab of blood on your finger, if that, a few hours later you go down hill, by the time anybody realises it's serious it's too late.
Makes you wonder. I got 3 lots of scars/ stitches on my head and lost count of the times I've banged it, enough to bring tears to the eyes, not to mention headed 1000's of balls.

Gutting for the team and town this and his family of course, just a year since Mark Farren died and Josh Daniels had most of his family killed in that accident in Buncrana.
He was a top player, tough tackler, leader. Life just over like that, unbelievable.

What a tackle. Never a freekick.

James McLean has asked to wear the number 5 jersey on Friday against Wales as a tribute to his friend and former colleague. There will also be a minutes silence and a min of applause in the 5th min of the game.

Tough week to be a Derry man.
