Did no one else seriously have a Gullit Mullet cap? I've imagined it haven't I.

It was an orange baseball cap, with dreadlocks hanging out the back from Euro 88.

Yeah, I can't find a picture at all. It was amazing and terrible at the same time. Ruud was an absolute beast back in the day.

It was no "Coca-Cola Italia 90 football" though, was it?

Everyone had one of these didn't they? Tournaments used to be so ace back in the day huh.

I have kind of odd memories of Gullit, because I missed him at his actual best (88 and winning everything with Milan) and mostly remember him just kind of lounging around the football field at Chelsea with a ridiculous haircut doing fancy flicks that didn't lead to anything and pronouncing the word 'sexy' like he was making love to it.

So he's kind of fixed in my mind as a loveable dodgy cult hero as opposed to the world class player he actually was.

My ex-wife and I passed him on a tube escalator once (he was coming down, we were heading up) and he was clearly blimping her. It was during the day but it was pretty empty in both directions so there was no misunderstanding. I was stood a step or 2 behind her, and he gave her a wink and a smile and then I said across to him, "you like, yeah" (or words to that effect, perhaps not quite so cool as that) and he nodded a yes.

I divorced her about 8 years ago (completely un-related to the above incident) so he's welcome to her now.

He was scouted by a lot of english teams as a teenager. I know Robson at Ipswich didn't bid because he thought he was too wild and I think arsenal turned him down as well. But I think the link with us is just rumour.

I mean we didn't really do the whole buying foreign players thing then and the idea that we turned him down for Atteveld is odd given we bought Atteveld in 89 when Gullit was already the best player in the world and had won everything.
