Rush Limbaugh row in the NFL

Probably not.

I dont suppose we have any equivalent here. Richard Littlejohn taking over a football team doesn't quite have the same effect.

It'd have to be something like Nick Griffin buying a club. Griffin would be sticking zyclon B in the shower system.

The players problems with Limbaugh probably has less to do with his politics than it does with the boarderline racist comments he has made in the past (most notably his comments regarding Donovan McNabb). However, his row with the NFL owners and the media attention he is receiving probably have a lot to do with his politics.

Well we let Thaskin buy a club, so no. We don't seem to care who runs our clubs. (let's not even start on that shady **** Abrahmovic)

That's a strange system they have there: the other team owners have to approve a new owner? How did that rule come about?

It's a pretty standard thing I believe in most American sports. The owners and/or the league must approve new owners. The ownership group interested in the Rams would have been better off keeping Limbaughs role a secret. Once it was out, there was very little chance enough parties were going to jump on board the idea of him owning a team.

There was an issue in MLB over the past few season where the Chicago Cubs were up for sale. One of the front runners to buy them was Mark Cuban, who also owns the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA. If you're not familiar with Cuban, he's a young (by ownership standards), very brash owner. Loved by the players, he can often be found sitting courtside and confronting officials during games, or at the very least, stirring up trouble with the league front office on a regular basis. He was basically kept from buying the Cubs by other baseball owners who did not want him coming in and shaking up their establishment.

Amazing to me.

The Premier League, as you probably know, has a 'fit and proper persons' test...pretty much a joke that a coach and horses can be driven through. The other club owners cant dictate who buys a competitor. I suppose the thinking on this over there is that the goose that lays the golden eggs is the integrity of the sport itself, and that cant be compromised.

I aint got much time for that Lawrence Ellison, he looks a right shifty bugger.

Sports
Ellison has been rebuffed in his attempts to buy the Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco 49ers. He is now pursuing ownership of a potential future NFL franchise in Los Angeles as well as a possible investment into Premier League football team Everton FC

I'd even go so far to call his comments less than borderline. His politics do play a big role - he is a lightning rod for anything political which is something the rest of the NFL owners have little interest with.

I personally think its awesome that some NFL players have come out and said they wouldn't play for him. You rarely, if ever, hear players get out publicly about owners but this was refreshing. Jim Irsay, who owns the Indianapolis Colts, has already stated he would not back a Limbaugh ownership - presume most other owners would say the same but behind closed doors.

With the nature of NFL contracts, I don't find it surprising that many won't speak out against the owners (just look at the Raiders). Even Roger Goddell has come out and questioned Limbaughs bid due to his track record.

It is interesting (or maybe not) to note that the of the political contributions made by the Rams in the recent past, something like 95% were to the Democratic party. I'm guessing that would change very quickly.
