Being an Evertonian I’m obviously a massive glutton for punishment, consequently I’m running the 31st Virgin London Marathon this Sunday. It has always been a lifetime ambition of mine to run the London Marathon and although I’m really nervous about it I am also really excited to fulfil one of my life goals. Old ‘Stumps’ here has been running through the cold winter months to get prepared for the big day, it hasn’t been a walk in the park as I’ve had to visit the physio twice with ‘runner’s knee’ and although he says I shall be fit to run I will feel some discomfort on the day. I completed the Liverpool half marathon a few weeks ago with relative ease and have done some other bigger runs so I really hope I can do myself justice for the big one!

I have decided to run the Marathon for Cancer Research and am hoping to raise about £200 for the charity. If any of you read my article a month or so ago titled ‘Abide with me: why I love Everton FC’ you will understand why I have decided to run for them, my mum was also diagnosed with skin cancer in 2006 but is now fit and healthy again. It’s a worthy cause and I’m proud to be representing them and helping them raise money.

As some of the finest minds in the country frequent the GOT Forum I was wondering if anyone had any final motivational words for me or could help me pick out some good songs for my ipod to keep me going on Sunday. Or even if you’ve really had your back against a wall at one or time or another and what kept you going then?

I think Kippling said it best, ‘if you can fill the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run, yours is the earth and all that’s in it, and what is more, you’ll be a man my son’.

What a great cause mate, no doubt you will hit a brick wall at some point but you just have to get through it, mentally I always tell myself when i'm struggling dont be a quitter, its easy to quit.

Good luck, i'm sure you will be fine!

Best of Luck mate, ive always thought about running the London Marathon -thats probably as far i will get in thinking about it lol

Well in mate, superb thing to do.

I've always found anything that's got the Brookes Brothers' name on it keeps me going an extra yard, wouldn't recommend that tempo for an entire marathon tho!
