It may sound obvious, but have you had your gait looked at ?

It could be the way you run, is causing the problems and could be corrected with the right shoes and inserts ?
Not sure but I have had physios look at how I run/walk. Nothing too out of the ordinary really. Once I get the back freed up a bit it becomes much easier. Just need to be able to go on regular runs without life or covid getting in the way.

I'm very methodical on stretching/warming up pre run and cooling down post run. I find it helps ease the prolonged effect of my exertions. Nothing too harsh. I don't practice Yoga or do Pilates, just leg/calf/back stretches and some shoulder work.

Just finished the Paris Marathon yesterday ;-)
Damaged my knee around the 18 mile mark but finished it by strolling along at times ! Took breathers at all water and feeding points too !
Knee strapped up and on pain killers and MRI to do next week but so worth it :-) Atmosphere was great and everyone encouraging everyone :-)

@COYBL25 those runners you recommended are real good. Noticed I feel less stiffness the next day after a biggish run as well.
One thing I’d say since having covid a few weeks ago, is that I’m groggy the first couple of miles and full of phlegm. Anyone else had that?

Well done mate, no shame in walking the last bit.

It‘s about finishing lines, not finishing times ;)

For many months after the virus, I felt like I just smoked a cigarette before my run, when I started off.

I just took my first few miles very easy for a good while.

Ps - I you want something a bit less cushioned and faster, the Hoka Torrent are very good.

Really wide in the toe for a Hoka, ultra light and great on things like grass, forest tracks, muddy paths etc.

Crossing that line and knowing you didn’t give up, is a wonderful achievement.

Any good running books you've read and recommend?

I'm currently reading "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon" and it's good, but a slow read for me. I think you really have to enjoy T&F (Athletics) to like this book.

Previously I enjoyed "Shoe Dog" (it's about Phil Knight and Nike, but a lot of running too), "Running with Lydiard," "Daniels Running Formula," and "Lore of Running" (never finished, but tbf who has?). I highly recommend "Born to Run," which I re-read last year, it's a fun read and will get you in a running mood.

First race of the year - Llangollen Fell Race.

Proper old skool fell race, with 3000 ft of inclines.

An early start in the non competitive runners group. Minus three, ice everywhere and the first 8 miles where virtually all uphill. ( I really should starting paying more attention to the route maps beforehand lol )

Once the sun got up, the ice turned to thick peaty sludge on the moorland paths, which made things quite tricky on the decents.

Did 17.5 miles in a tad over 4 hrs, which was my target time, so happy with that.

A very tentative 4 mile run-walk- run for me today as I’ve been hit with Covid so first run back. I now need to build slowly back up again for the Edinburgh marathon in 7 weeks, planned time has gone out the window though, will just put a Plan B in place and take it easy.

If you’re anything like me post Covid, all my speed stuff went out of the window, due to struggling to breath properly.

still just running three 5k trail runs a week with Mrs HJ, not bothered about the times just keeping injury free and checking out Mrs HJs arse in her running gear. In all honesty I mainly do it just to check out Mrs HJ’s arse in her running gear.
