Ross Barkley

Why ?

He's white skinned, I don't think that it's typical for the skin colour of footballer's grandparents to be common knowledge.

I wouldn't have known he had a black grandfather, I had a vague recollection when I saw it posted in this thread, and I'm an Everton fan.

Yes - but you didn't say he looks like a gorilla, nor do you have a lengthy record of making comments like that, nor are people employed to check that what you write isn't libellous.

His implication is that Ross is stupid and has the look of somebody who is lost and confused, when you write an article for a paper or magazine etc, your job as a writer is to get the readers attention and paint an image in their mind, so back to the insult, Makenzie now has to think of something that also looks stupid basically and compared him to a gorilla. Race has nothing to do with it but his comments are inexcusable and he should be reprimanded for having strong opinions on somebody personally and a city as a whole.

This, basically.

Strange that it was a player whose got a Nigerian grandparent that he chose to compare to a gorilla mate, would you feel the same if fans would mysteriously decide to do monkey chants at him? It was blatant as it comes and fits his view of the city and its people.

There's hard anyone outside of Everton's support who knows anything about Barkley's background and they'd be surprised to be told he was of mixed race probably.

Anyway, it's not my point or issue with this. My point has been that McKenzie is scum and shouldn't be reacted to because he gets a buzz off it and Joe Anderson should have called him out exclusively on the usual lazy offensive Liverpool stereotypes. Instead he's just underscored all the talk of seperate races..whatever they are, because I dont feel part of any 'city race'.

Exactly.

Have to say I agree with this, I don't see this as a racial slur at all but it is tremendously disrespectful and should not be tolerated. Today's society while being all about respect is a little too quick to jump on the race bandwagon, while Its good that that we want to protect others sometimes it is more about the statement than the actual caring for our fellow human beings. I hope the guy gets reprimanded for this and just to clear things up he should issue an apology.

Why gorilla comparison?

i dont know about you but whenever an exciting young player breaks through in the premier league i would have a quick look on the internet, wikipedia etc to get a bit of info.
if i was writing a newspaper column on someone id do a bit of research as well.
its always been well known that ross was eligible to play for england and nigeria and a quick look on wikipedia would have told mckenzie that if he didnt already know.
no doubt he knew what he was saying.

That's a poor analogy.

You can call somebody a gorilla or a beast without it being racist. I'm reminded of a storyline in the TV show 'The Entourage' where a white character is turned into an angry and stupid gorilla for a cartoon. The characterisation had nothing to do with the historical racial insult, and the same is true here.

I highly doubt Kelvin MacKenzie knew Barkley had a grandfather of African descent, his description of Barkley was moronic and offensive but not racist at all. For people to suggest so and then be offended on Barkleys behalf is totally stupid.

By all means slate MacKenzie, but don't try and do it with something that simply isn't true.
My slant is taken from a legal viewpoint. I'm not taking faux offence, just interpreting the guidelines.

Just sign the deal Ross ;)
