Ross Barkley

Not at all - we have every right to question the manager.

However, given we have lost 1 league game in 8, and are currently 6th, and have got a very respectable result against the best side in the league at their own place, I don't think it's an issue. That's not being dismissive, it's just a bit of common sense and reasoning.

I don't know what game you were watching but when we 'effectively went to a defensive eight', we didn't concede any more ground or possession than we had been doing - City hammered us all game, not just in the last 20 minutes or so.

And while I respect that Barkley coming on may have changed the game in our favour, Ron obviously deemed that he wasn't the right person to come on at that stage - and as I said, he's the one who's paid to make sure that first and foremost we didn't lose that game - and while it's not the 'negative' style that Moyes always adapted at big sides (albeit he was good vs City), it was a more pragmatic approach.

It was in no way a baffling decision either, considering Ross's recent form.

See United yesterday. Two average sides in all honesty, but they had a gameplan and stuck to it. Had we been a goal down, as opposed to a goal-up/level, I think we'd have seen Ross come on.
I'm sorry mate but I've read your post again and I still think it is dismissive, as in dismissive of my point of view. In fact you're still doing it now by assuming your point of view must be right because it is reasonable and makes common sense which, by definition, must mean mine isn't/doesn't.

Think we'll just have to disagree on the substitution. Nowhere did I say it was baffling by the way. Just said I'd have tried something different.

and I was definitely watching the same game as you. Just saw it differently to you did.

That game away to Southampton, look how much Barkley looks like he's enjoying himself, and playing with a smile on his face, just haven't seen that this season.

First few games I think we did mate.

That England knock-back seems to have had a real effect on him and he just hasn't performed since that Sunderland game really (though he was good vs Boro).

He needs to take up the mantle again though.

That's fine mate - I genuinely wasn't meaning to be dismissive, I just think - while we can question the manager - it wasn't a decision that, IMO, the game hinged on. If you see it differently that's fine.

I myself questioned Koeman for his tactics against Bournemouth. But personally I think he got it pretty much spot on on Saturday.

While I'd have liked to see Ross introduced, I can totally understand why he wasn't.

I still can't work out his best position or style that suits him best. Would he thrive in Wenger's Arsenal or in a counter attacking team ? He seems like he is always slowing down the game and looking to thread balls through or drive through the middle whereas I think sweeping fast passes and speed would suit him best. I think that 2nd attacker is his best position if he would shoot more

Ross Barkley has been sleepwalking this season with Everton... but Ronald Koeman is the man to wake him up
  • Ross Barkley was left on the bench for Everton's draw at Manchester City
  • He had made 55 consecutive Premier League appearances up to that point
  • The midfielder has struggled for form and has been left out by England
  • Barkley needs to find some consistency and improve his decision-making
  • Ronald Koeman is the right man to get the most out of the 22-year-old

For a player who has been sleepwalking through much of this season, Ross Barkley's 'wake-up call' couldn't have come soon enough.

That is how Ronald Koeman described his decision to drop the midfielder for last weekend's 1-1 draw at Manchester City, a game which Barkley was forced to watch entirely from the bench.

A run of 55 consecutive Premier League appearances came to an end at the Etihad, and with good reason, too. Barkley simply did not warrant a place in the starting XI.

The 22-year-old's omission was not completely down to his recent form, with Koeman opting for a more defensively-minded midfield three against Pep Guardiola's stylish side.

But the fact that Barkley was not trusted to play a deeper role, or even come on when the game was stretched and Everton had more of the ball, must be a worry for Everton midfielder.

His performances so far this season have been a mixed bag, with some bright displays marred by a few anonymous showings, most notably during the 3-0 victory at Sunderland in mid-September.

On that occasion, Koeman ruthlessly took Barkley off at half-time after 45 minutes of poor passing, awful decisions and lacklustre effort. He could have few complaints, especially after his replacement, Gerard Deulofeu, helped inject some much-needed energy into the visitors after the break.

Barkley was made to watch a video of his performance at the Stadium of Light, with Koeman admitting publicly that 'he did not play well and lost many balls'. The Dutchman is not a man who will let Barkley - or any of his players - coast through the season, as was the case at times over the previous two campaigns.

The midfielder's season started well as he scored in the opening day draw with Tottenham

It would be wrong to suggest that Barkley has been off the pace since the season kicked-off back in August. He scored on the opening day against Tottenham - albeit from a fortuitous free-kick - and provided the assist for Kevin Mirallas' equaliser at West Brom a week later.

He has played 19 key passes this term - the joint-seventh highest return in the Premier League along with the in-form Kevin De Bruyne and Dimitri Payet - and he created an impressive seven chances in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last month.

But despite some promising statistics, the feeling among a significant section of supporters - and seemingly Koeman himself - is that Barkley is not making the most of his huge potential.

His technique and ability to run confidently with the ball are not in question, but the same cannot be said of his consistency and decision-making.

Too often Barkley is found on the outskirts of matches, failing to make an impact, dictate possession or pick a killer pass. And unlike in previous seasons, he cannot blame being shunted out wide, having played mostly through the middle since Koeman's arrival at Goodison Park last summer.

Barkley created seven chances during Everton's draw with Crystal Palace earlier this season

His underwhelming form was taken into account by Gareth Southgate when he left him out of the England squad for games against Malta and Slovenia this month. He also failed to make Sam Allardyce's list of 23 in late August.

Barkley was included in Roy Hodgson's travelling party for last summer's European Championship in France, but failed to play a single minute. In contrast, Tottenham's Dele Alli, who is two years his junior, is now a regular starter after making his senior debut less than a year ago.

Barkley remains an extremely gifted player, but his development appears to have slowed, particularly in relation to Alli, one of his rivals on the international stage. He simply cannot afford to fall further behind.

Fortunately, Barkley now has a club manager who takes no prisoners, who is not afraid to tell it like it is and will not stroke his ego with wild claims of him becoming his country's best ever player, as was the case with Koeman's predecessor, Roberto Martinez.

Barkley had an afternoon to forget as Everton were beaten 1-0 by Bournemouth in September

The Dutchman will drop Barkley, he will speak to him, sternly, when he hasn't been good enough, and he will give him every chance to get back on track and back in the first-team at Everton.

Speaking about his decision to leave Barkley out last weekend ahead of Saturday's game at Burnley, the former Southampton boss said: 'His reaction was positive. He was OK but disappointed. You need to be disappointed if you don't start.

'I changed him and I did not start with him but it can be different this weekend. That is possible, you like to have the best team for the weekend. We will have more ball possession this weekend than we did last week.

'It is a difficult game, Burnley are strong at home. We will have more ball possession and need more attacking threat so that is a reason to start with one or two more attacking players.'

Expect Koeman to give Barkley another opportunity to redeem himself at Turf Moor. The rest is up to Ross.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman urges Ross Barkley to use Man City omission as a 'wake-up call'
RONALD KOEMAN has called on Ross Barkley to use his omission against Manchester City last weekend as a “wake-up call” as he demanded Everton start easing the burden on Romelu Lukaku.

Barkley was an unused substitute in last weekend’s 1-1 stalemate at The Etihad as Koeman opted for a different tactical approach against Pep Guardiola’s side.

It was the first time in 55 Premier League games that Barkley had not been involved.

Everton visit Burnley on Saturday when Barkley will come back into the reckoning, but Koeman is continuing his hardline approach with a player he believes can no longer be regarded as a promising talent.

“Maybe last weekend was a good wake up call for him,” said Koeman.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman insists he no longer regards Ross Barkley as a talent
“In my opinion, it was the best line up to have the best chance against Man City last week. His reaction was positive. He was disappointed, but he is training well.

“We played a little bit differently than normally. I did not start with him but it could be different at the weekend.

“He is already been playing for four years in the first team and you are not ‘a talent’ any more. It means you have to show you have improved.

“If I am not totally happy, or it is tactical, then he does not start.”

Whether Barkley starts at Turf Moor or not, Koeman wants more from his attacking players with Romelu Lukaku having supplied six of Everton’s last eight league goals.

Seamus Coleman and Gareth Barry are the only other outfield players to score in the league since August.

“We would like to have more players who score more goals in our team,” said Koeman.

“The productivity of one player is very high - Romelu - the players around him attacking wise have to show more productivity. I want to see more than one every game, we like and need to create and score more goals.”

Leighton Baines will be missing with a recurrence of a hamstring injury.
