Ronnie O'Sullivan says this year's World Championship could be his last major event, stating he only returned to the sport for "a bit of money".

The defending champion, 37, beat Stuart Bingham 13-4 on Wednesday to move into the semi-finals of the tournament.

O'Sullivan pulled out of the 2012-13 season last November because of "personal issues" before ending his snooker sabbatical in February.

"I've realised I don't miss snooker but I needed a bit of money," he said.

"I'll be honest, I still owe the school money for my children's school fees, I haven't paid the last two or three terms.

"I didn't know what was going to happen here but I've made a little bit of money now so I can go and pay the school fees now for the next two years.

"But really I don't think snooker is for me. This could be my last proper major event."

O'Sullivan's reward for defeating Bingham is an enticing last four encounter with Judd Trump, who overcame Shaun Murphy 13-12 in a thrilling quarter-final.

Despite confirming he has fallen out of love with the game, O'Sullivan promised he will give his all against Trump.

He added: "I'm a competitor and I hate losing. I will fight to the death. They'll have to scrape me off the table.

"I've got five days left potentially, it could possibly be three, and if I can't get through that then something's seriously wrong.

"The light at the end of the tunnel is it doesn't have to go on any longer."

Hes got some serious, serious demons that fella.

I read his autobiography and he is a troubled soul. Decent read actually. His dad owned sex shops!

Got some issues does Ronnie. Bit weird to hear possibly the most naturally gifted player ever swat it away by saying its not for me.

Dunno how he's got no money, like. Should be a millionaire several times over.

Drugs, was it?

Fair enough, he's been in the limelight for 20 years no, ever since he won the 1993 UK Championship?
Its understandable that he feels he doesn't have anything left to prove. If he hangs up his cue at the end of this tournament then it would be perfect way for him to go out, really..

There's something fitting about the games greatest ever talent going out on a high, instead of descending the slippery slope as per Davis/Hendry.

Having said that, I bet his "school fees" comment was taking the p1$s and baiting the media a bit.

They said Davis loves Snooker, Hendry loves winning.. A fitting epitath for O'Sullivan would be that he loves producing perfection.

He's almost too good for the game. That 147 he pulled off in however many minutes was as close to perfection as possible - the game can't really go anywhere from that point.
Put's snooker in an unusual position as nearly all sports grow and evolve, whereas it's hard to see snooker being much beyond that level of play in 50 years time.

Doesn't appreciate how lucky he is making serious amounts of cash from playing snooker.

A classic case of careful what you wish for, about to go on here, he was talking about renovating houses being his future profession. LOL, 6 months sat on his arse watching Homes under the Hammer & he's decided he can replace his £M snooker earnings......

I have zero pity for him, I just think he's a bell end tbh.

Flawed genius.

But what a player, he makes snooker exciting

Alex Higgins was another monstrously-talented player who had his issues.

These two have (had) a very individual style which is sumptious to watch. Other champions like Steve Davis, Hendry, Higgins etc are (were) clinically-brilliant but over time predictable and a little boring to watch.

Maybe the 'issues' are essential to the entertaining style-of-play.
