Player Valuation: £6m
Was at the game on Friday night and was impressed with all the youngsters. Rodwell stood out though. Was playing in the holding role and gave a very good performance. I dont remember one bad pass, where as pip gave so many i lost count.

What do we think? I think he will play a role next year. Cup matches and maybe even push into the starting 11.

Was also very impressed by Jose Baxter and also Dan Gossling has a great future I believe. Hope they'll get some experience this season an go on to become EFC regulars in a few years time.

He's ready to be a squad player. He has the intelligence, physique and composure to make it here and contribute.

Hopefully he will.....excellent talent.

Why not a first team player? You see this is what I don't understand, Rodwell and Baxter have both been labelled as better than Rooney was at their ages. Yet nobody would ever deny that Rooney was brought in too soon.

If the lads can do it, then put them in. The fact that Rodwell is playing more games than not is a clear indication that Moyes doesn't see him as a mere squad player. Baxter also I feel is going to be elevated into the squad though, reserves may have to without him.

Noticed that he's been moved from defender to midfielder on the offical website as well - always good to have some versatility and means we won't have to waste wages or transfer money bringing in someone like Gardner again.

With the new 7-sub bench going into affect, I'm sure we'll get to see all 3 of the boys mentioned get match-time and hopefully come on lepas and bounds.

Because we can probably buy better. Rodwell has alot of potential but he's not ready to take over from Carsley. I'd bring someone in (M'Bia/Diarra/Topal) and use Rodwell as there understudy. He can develop, learn his position and eventually succeed whoever he's working under.

You've got to remember that Rodwell has only been playing centre midfield for a season. I've watched him and whilst he has alot of potential he still needs to work on a few things like positioning and when to make certain decisions.

If he's an understudy I'd expect him to get atleast 10 games next season which would be good for his development. I don't think he's ready to be playing week in week out.

Rodwell is only playing every game because we don't have many central midfielders. Moyes has said defensive midfield is priorty and I expect someone to be brought in. Rodwell will play his part, I have no doubts about that but it won't be as a regular.

Baxter I'd like to see on the bench a few times as you said last week. With 7 subs he'd be a useful impact player.

yeah but your saying that like Carsley was good? He wasn't that good and made plenty of errors. From what I have read Roswell hasn't put a foot wrong, so why spend £10m on a player, when we already have a future captain wanting to play.

Rodwell is playing because he's quality, and has been since he was 15. Remember he made his reserve debut 2 years ago, coming on for David Weir. No need to buy anyone in defensive midfield. Rodwell is the man.

Would be great if that was the case. Time will tell this season. I suspect an extra midfielder will be signed regardless though because it's a big ask for a 16 year old to play a whole season, even if he is good enough to be in the team.

I didn't rate Carsley personally but he didn't make alot of mistakes. He kept is simple and played to the best of his limited ability. He wasn't good enough but he was experienced and could sniff out danger.

Rodwell has been impressive but he isn't ready. I've seen things that I like and I've seen things that he needs to work on. His positioning is sometimes a little off and I'm yet to see him break up play. He is very good in possession and has alot of quality on the ball but he definatly needs to learn his position more.

Rodwell is playing because we don't have another defensive midfielder on our books. Neville (a right back) and Gosling are the only people battling with him and that's not much competition. Once we get a new defensive midfielder in I expect him to be the new mans understudy.

We don't have to spend 10 million either, M'Bia has been rumoured to be around the 4-6 million. Bringing him in will only get the best out of Rodwell. He can compete with him, learn from him and eventually succeed him.

I dont think Moyes will start him, the best he cqan hope for at present is some sub appearences. Even if he has the ability at present, there is so much more to consider, you have to handle young players with kid gloves, by their nature they are inconsistent, they may have one or two blinding games but they then fade a bit, as they are not mature enough either physicaly or mentaly to acueive the appropriate level of consisteny over the season. Thats why you dip them in and out of a team.

You also have to manage the expectation level around them, this thread is evidance of increasing expectations. For example if we dont sign another DM and start with Rodwell and he playes four blinding games then six bad ones, the level of frustration and criticism by fans could seriously hinder their confidence and development. Look at Neville and the critisim he gets in midfield, that would be hard and some what unfair on a younger player, learning and expeirencing the senior game for the first time.

So for me his appearences will be staggered we will see him at intervals and staggered appearences, untill he develops consistency and expierence, he may do it now for one or two games, but the trick is doing it in 45 odd games over a season, he no way ready for that, nor shold we expect it. Frankly Moyes just wont do it.

Its also important to remember Rooney was never a regular starter for us.

Everton boss Dave Moyes has been impressed by Jack Rodwell's form in preseason.

"There are bits of his game that he needs to improve on but that is more to do with age and experience," he told the Daily Post.

"What you can't fault him on is his passing. He is comfortable in possession, he's got a style about him and the way he does things. What he needs is the experience of getting roughed up a little bit.

"That will happen when the 'big ball' comes out.

"He has always been in my thoughts and is doing well.

"But there will be times when it helps his development to go back down into the reserves and come through the way most young players do." Of the youngsters, Moyes adds: "As the season goes on, we are going to have to use these boys as we don't really have big numbers."

he looks brilliant for his age, looks so comfortable and composed on the ball.

I think he'll be used quite abit next season.

I stand corrected. Even still, we'll need two decent players for each position, especially if we have good cup runs like last season. Even though Rooney burst onto the scene early in his life he was still played sparingly by Moyes in his first season.

I agree we need experience for first choice in that position, id love it if we could get alonso.
