Rodwell out on loan ?

Totally...

But it wont happen here.

I wouldnt be surprised to see Rodwell on the right wing against Spurs or QPR...if not, its a dead cert Osman will be.

*sigh*

I said in another thread that hopefully Coleman's injury can be turned into a positive and Barkley can get a chance. But that yeah, Osman will almost definitely start at RM. =/

As for Rodders, I hope we never see him out wide again. I was curious myself as to whether he'd be good there but we have our answer. Personally I think he's looked best in the Cahill kind of role; as the most advanced of a central midfield trio. But usurping Cahill is a genuinely impossible task.

I always think with Rodwell he looks a bit lost, really don't feel that Moyes gives him much direction in terms of what to do on the pitch. That's just personal opinion, but he doesn't know whether he's coming or going in centre mid. Maybe if he was told to definitely hold or definitely attack it would be better but I don't know.

Yup.

As mentioned, since he's broken through, he's started out as a centre back in the reserves to playing defensive, central, attacking midfield and right wing in his limited pitch time in the premier league.

Jack Wilshire for example has played mostly central midfield and a stint on the wing......

Says a lot. And if you're playing Fellaini AND Rodwell...who's supposed to keep the midfield ticking in the centre?

Yep.

He was poor tonight...but the spells where he looked good was further up the field driving forward.

This is where the confusion for the lad must come from...he expected to do the same from a deeper position, or hold his position and feed to the wings?

In Moyes' defense, I wouldn't pick Rodwell over Fellaini at DM or Osman at AM, so I can understand why he's not played in one position consistently. He has to wait for injuries. This is why I think loaning him out is a very good idea. We're blessed with an extremely strong batch of central midfielders, and this is a double-edged sword where Rodwell's progress is concerned.

Which is why his growth will stop here.

If we had Europa Football...I wouldnt be as worried as he'd play tonns more games.

But as we only have the league and cups, to which Moyes always wants to field a strong team out...he's going nowhere fast.

I think Rodwell is trying to adapt his game to be a defensively-minded midfielder. Personally, I think it's a mistake. I think he's a good box to box player who's more capable than anyone at the club of driving aggressively forward and at pace with the ball. Don't forget that he's also got a fierce shot on him. Again, playing to his strengths, he's stood out while on international duty. Moyes is taking that away from him and giving him too much defensive responsibility in my opinion, which is why the works he's doing isn't catching the eye so much.

He needs game time .... for us.

I agree... but I don't. I am tired of players who just need game time. Arteta needs 6 weeks of game time before he is back on form from one of his injuries.... Rodwell needs game time to gain confidence and feel out his position in the top XI, Bily need game time to build confidence....

Where the hell are professional footballers (who have all the training facilities and coaching in the world available to them) going to step from the training pitch into Goodison, rev their engines for 10 minutes in their first game and start fitting into the squad from there forward?

It looks and sounds as though Barkley and Coleman just want it more than the others do. If £20k or more a week doesn't give you confidence then maybe you're overpaid. Take your chances when you get them or move aside for someone else.

I wouldn't loan out anyone at the moment. If injuries start to pile up again, Rodwell may be required to demonstrate his versatility in a defensive role this season!

Have said a loan would do him good for a while. A couple of years ago I'd have put him ahead of Wilshere, not now. That season at Notlob did wonders for Wilshere. We should have done the same with Rodwell, but I still think he'd benefit from it. Worked with Coleman, too. This playing a different position every time he gets a game can't be doing him any good, either.

Shame our squad is probably too small to do it.
