First film I seen him in was willy works and the next film was stir crazy, was only a kid and I thought it it was the best film ever. Him and Pryor were great together

Supreme talent especially when paired with Richard Pryor or Mel Brooks. Unlike so many celebs today he never took himself seriously as a result I don't think he actually realised how good he was. Sadly he had suffered from Alzheimer's for some years.

RIP Gene, thanks for all the great laughs

Was very sad to hear about this.

Genuinely legendary entertainer, he made the films what they were. Will always be the best willy wonka and always made me laugh in his movies.

He will live on through his movies.

Incredibly sad and moving. 2016 is a truly ghastly year.

I got a little upset hearing that he's been unwell but didn't want it out in the public as he wanted to keep the smile on people's faces rather than remember him unwell.
