Woke up to this awful news on Facebook this morning.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16327379
It's emerging now that the serviceman who dies in the linked story was Sqn Ldr Ant Downing, RAF.
Sqn Ldr Downing was my OC for 3 years while I was serving on Nimrod Line Squadron, RAF Kinloss.
I can honestly say, I've never worked for a better boss, either in the forces or in civilian life. He lead by example in everything he did, and challenged you to live up to your potential, not to just bump along with the crowd.
On the dining in night to commemorate the end of NLS when the Nimrod MR2 was withdrawn from service, Ant gave a speech in the form of a poem, listing every man and woman who had ever served on NLS, including a little story, relevant to each. The poem lasted about half an hour and everyone watched open mouthed as he delivered it all from memory. The applause when he finished was like nothing I've ever witnessed, nor am likely to every again.
RIP Boss. Per Ardua ad Astra
