Alright lids.

Booked a city break to Riga for me and my girlfriend for her Birthday, going between Christmas and New Year. Just wondering if any of you had been and if there's anywhere you would recommend eating/drinking/visiting? Bit of a ballache it's gone to the Euro but hopefully it shouldn't make too much diference!

I'm sure my mate stayed here. He stayed in a hotel that had a lap dancing bar in the basement.

Quality city. Went with the Mrs about 7 years ago. Alcohol was dirt cheap. Castle museum was good. Buy a guidebook and do some of the walks. It's not a huge city and it's easy to get about. Not a lot of English spoken when we where there but that's probably changed. The local women are stunning as is the architecture. You'll have a great time.

It's a really nice city to cycle in, if you're into that sort of thing.

We went to a restaurant called Rozengrals (this is two years ago now, but I imagine it's still there) that's in a network of underground cellars and has a medieval theme in keeping with its old town location. Not as touristy as it sounds and the atmosphere was great. Ended up drinking the night away with some locals, which seems to be a common thing. Good food, okay price.

We did the same a little bit earlier than dion and I'd agree with his verdict.

There was a stunning museum in one of the main squares. Looking at the website, they may be renovating it and the permanent exhibition might have moved elsewhere in the meantime but it is well worth the visit. We popped in for a quick visit and ended up spending hours in there. Essentially it tells the story of Latvia first under the Nazis, then under the Russians and finally ending with freedom:
Museum of the Occupation

Occupatiom museum is quite good

Russian black market is a weird little place to pop in for an hour

Take some potatoes with you and live like a king
