It's something any parents should never, ever have to go through, but Rhys' parents have shown incredible strength, dignity and humility all through their desperately sad loss. They epitomise what I hope I would be like if it were one of my kids. And they epitomise what being a decent, honest, hard-working family is. On another plane they are Evertonians, and the fact that they have found some solace, some calm waters amongst other Blues is a fitting commendation to our Club and how it really does embed itself whole-heartedly in the community.
I recall like it was yesterday the home match after Rhys' death and how we all stood with tears in our eyes for one of our own.....most of all I remember simply wondering how the family would cope. It's clear they are a strong, resilient and loving family and that they would never have allowed themselves not to cope. Unfortunately I'll miss Sunday as I'll be on a flight across the Atlantic....but my thoughts will be firmly on Goodison, and for this weekend they will be focussed in remembrance of Rhys, and of course Howard, and the game will be somewhat incidental.
Give them a tremendous and heartfelt Everton reception and show those who don't already know what a truly unique family Everton is.
