Does this mean we now "own" the player or have the rights to own him at the end of the loan period after his contract expires?
Any ideas?

Its called a "temporary transfer of registration" if its a loan.

or "transfer of registration" for a purchase.

We could indeed have a "pre-contract agreement" with him... but I doubt that would be made public.

I thought he was on a year loan but only had a year remaining on his contract so maybe the loan was setup in case our outgoings didnt appear. Now hoever we may own the player.

Could be right. We probably couldnt commit to a long contract until yak officially left, so to make sure everything went through on time we signed him on loan forms for now.

Taking him on a loan is better than on a free because now we can get assistance from Madrid to pay his wages.

I read he's only on 40k a week and we are paying it.

If he ends up being THAT good over his loan period, he won't be an everton player

Why not though? If we do well and he helps us do well, then why would he leave? He's been unsettled everywhere he's been so far for a while so if he does well here and so do we i really don't know why he wouldn't want to stay

Real Madrid C. F. and AS Roma have reached an agreement for the loan of Fernando Gago to the Italian club.

Indeed. Also the telegraph released the story as him signing on a free transfer rather than a loan. Seems there is more in it perhaps? If so, it is a great coup for a player who cost £12m ish in 2007.
