Alright lids. I've been interested in photography for a little bit, nothing serious, just like the idea of it that's all. Anyway I'm after a camera that I could get with a bit of left over Christmas money when I get it. Not after some professional thing but rather something that does the job while looking good. Also nothing too expensive but no awful quality one neither. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

The experts and I agree, You'll want a bridging camera, as you aren't that interested now, but 6 months with a good fixed lense system and you'll want a DSLR for sure. Of the three price ranges for these types of cameras, these are the best according to CNET.

High end Point and Shoot -

SONY NEX 7 ($1000 - $1200 AUD)

Very tidy bit of kit, really good images, and also interchangeable lenses. 24.3 MP is also bloody amazing. My Camera is only 18 MP and its a DSLR. Your looking at around $1150 AUD for this though, which is really top end.

At the other end of the scale, Id be looking at a

Canon Powershot SX 260 ($200 - $300 AUD),

Cheap and cheerful, point and shoot my friend.

Or a

Sony Cybershot DSC RX100 ($550 - $650 AUD)

Youll want something with video, and they mostly do that nowadays, 20.2 MP this is a boss little camera.

Having a look at the discount stores, 14 MP Cameras from Olympus, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Nikon and Canon for around $100.

Honestly I'd say grab a slightly older DSLR, 20d or 30d with a decent lens. although I think you'll struggle to get good quality for £50.

I got myself a Sony a380 DSLR for circa £300 with a lens kit. While the Lens kit wasn't so great, I have been able to afford some really decent lenses, my favourite being my f1.2 50Ø. Even though I only have 10.2mp it take a fantastic picture, and as I'm not priting out at any bigger than A1, theres is very, very little loss in sharpness. If you are at all interested in photo editing, photoshop and the likes, its well worth finding a camera that will process RAW format.

I have a fairly middle of the road 300 lens now which only stops at f4.5 but still takes a good quality picture.

I would recommend the Sony DSLR cameras as there is steadyshot inside the camera body, which means that the lens' are that bit cheaper, and its the lens that makes all the difference to your pictures.

Zoom Lenses for Canon you cant go past this beast.

17-85mm - I use this everyday and its brilliant.

depends on the camera - that won't fit a full frame sensor. The best none full frame lenses are the 17-55 2.8 IS and the 10-22 both amazing, both are also very pricey.

It all depends how serious you'd like to get. DSLR's will offer the best quality, even a slightly older one. Check out some local London Camera Exchanges, or look online.

Laymans terms though, what are you going to need 10mm for? Fishbowl stuff. Deffo getting a 5D when Ive got the $$

10mm is landscape stuff, I used to use it at weddings until I upgraded to a 5d and went for a 17-40.

It all depends what the OP wants to shoot.

Lanscapes - the wider the better
Portraits - 50mm - 135mm area
animals - 200mm plus

Sports will depend on which ones and how close, most PL games have a mixture of wider lenses and 600mm lenses.

for animals, young kids and sports you're going to need faster glass (this mean a wider aperture this is the fnumber f/2.8 f4-5.6)
